Copper alloy Wheel. Probably pressed metal flanged wheel with three round apertures and a lug, probably one half of a two-part pulley wheel. The flange has opposed spurs probably relating to its function; the hub of the wheel projects externally and is dimpled within, it was probably gripped externally by paired brackets. Possibly from a domestic pulley system, as used to raise and lower indoor clothes drying racks; similar objects also served to route bell pull wires where domestic servants were employed, and for related purposes. Copper alloy bell. Cast open mouthed bell with a flat top. A central rectangular hole in the top, 2.5mm across, held a separate clapper (lost). A turned or incised line runs around the edge of the flared rim of the bell. Slightly bent and split at one point on the rim. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Copper alloy, plaster and glass Unknown. Cast cylinder with a flange around one end, and two circumferential ribs bearing a series of lozenges, probably to afford grip or to secure the cylinder. The inside of the cylinder bears three circumferential grooves at its flanged end. The other end contains the flat end of a tapered object of solid clear white (i.e. transparent) glass which was formerly held in place by a layer of white fixative. Copper alloy Loop. Oval loop with a handle made by twisting a length of flat rectangular section wire of 2.3mm width and 0.7mm thickness (with corrosion); the end has been cut with shears. Though green corrosion covers much of the wire, bright metal is exposed by abrasion at one end. This resembles the wire handle of a bottle brush, though deliberately cut, perhaps to serve as a toy for blowing soap bubbles. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950. Copper alloy and steel Buckle. Cast sub-rectangular frame with relief decoration and rounded edges, with a steel spindle retaining a loop chape with a single internal prong. The chape bears the stamped maker's name TERRY, in a Roman letter style which appears to this reporter of possibly more recent date than that ascribed to this form of buckle by Whitehead (1996, page 103, no. 662), which is 1690-1720. White Metal Possible Mount. Cast metal strip, broken in half, with upper curved edges and a straighter lower edge which suggest the object has been trimmed here, perhaps to remove an unwanted text or title. An embossed motif, which appears reversed on the back, comprises a cushion crown over four elongated leaves arranged as a saltire flanked by a pair of anchors on a ground of further similar leaves. Lead Spindle Whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with aperture of diameter 10.55. Decoration on one side only comprises a cast Star of Solomon (more recently known as the Star of David) comprising two intersecting triangles. The cylindrical form relates this object to Anglo-Scandinavian forms but the aperture is wider than that appearing on many earlier examples. The mass is similar to that of medieval whorls made of stone and would - unusually for a lead whorl - allow it to be used for spinning a yarn rather than cord.
