A cast copper alloy buckle dating from the medieval period. The buckle is incomplete but would have had a frame of two oval loops (sometimes refered to as a spectacal buckle); only part of the frame remains but this has several knops extending oputward from the fram; it is possible that the small recesses within the knops held a small stone or enamel as decoration, or they may have been left empty. This style of buckle dates from c.1250-1400 AD.

A cast copper alloy Medieval buckle and plate dating from c.1250-1350 AD. The buckle is oval in plan and has an enlarge outer edge with a groove in the centre to tak ethe pin; the pin is complete and is made from a single piece of copper alloy simply wrapped around the pin bar; a rectangular buckle plate is also afixed to the pin bar by two arms; the opposite end of the plate has three rivet holes (with two rivets surviving) that would have secured the plate to the strap. The whole object appears to have been gilded as elements of this survives.

A copper alloy buckle plate dating from the medieval period (c. 13th century AD). The buckle plate is rectangular in form and constructed from a single sheet of copper; the plate has two 'arms' cut from the main rectangle, looped over with a recess between for the buckle pin. The upper-side of the plate is decorated with a large spiral or tendril above a smaller one, repeated on the opposing length of the plate so the pattern is symmetrical. Some gilding remains on the face plate, and two copper rivets at the base of the plate remain intact. It can be compared with NMS-7773F7 on this …

An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle (probably), possibly dating to the Roman period although it could date to the Medieval period. The object consists of a rounded corner of the frame, the bottom of which swells outwards before narrowing to a double banded moulded constriction. The reverse of the object is slightly concaved, and there is no decoration anywhere on the object. The object is broadly similar to some zoomorphic buckles of the late Roman period (Hawkes & dunning 1961), but no direct comparison could be made, hence the uncertainty of date.

A cast copper alloy annular buckle dating to the medieval period. The buckle is unusual in that it retains a buckle plate, which is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy wrapped around the pin bar. There is a recess in the buckle plate for the pin and two rivets at the back of the plate to secure it to a strap; one iron rivet is retained. The buckle itself is annular without any decoration, although the reverse shows evidence of filing. The pin, a simple copper alloy bar wrapped around the pin bar, is intact. This style of buckle dates from c. AD 1250-1350.

An incomplete cast copper alloy late Roman military buckle, dating from the late 4th century. The remains of the buckle consists of approximately half of the buckle frame; this has two zoomorphic heads, from the mouths of which protrude the pin and plate bar (now both missing). The beasts' heads are stylised but an up-turned, open snout and pair of eyes are clearly depicted. There is no other detail. This buckle is of Hawkes & Dunning (1961) Type IIIA.

A cast copper alloy double loop buckle, dating from the Medieval period. The buckle is a small example, and retains not only the copper pin but also a small strap plate affixed to the pin bar; this small folded sheet of copper alloy is looped over the pin bar and would have been secured to a strap with a rivet, which survives intact. It is not common to find such a buckle with the strap plate intact in this way. This type of buckle dates from c. AD 1250-1400.

A copper alloy sheet from a Medieval buckle plate. The plate consists of the upper sheet only, which is decorated with a zoomorphic image of a crouching or crawling beast with a large oval eye. The background is decorated with simple incised zig-zags. The plate itself is rectangular, with on end ebing concaved - this is a feature of buckle plates used with oval composite buckles (forked buckles). There is a small rivet hole set back and centrally from this terminal. The opposing end appears broken, while the whole is now bent and distorted. This style of buckle plate design dates from…
