Copper-alloy decorated hawking whistle with a zoomorphic projection from the whistle body, which has the appearance of a bird. Features of a beak are visible on the curving terminal with the incised eyes surrounded by a repeated incised pattern indicating feathers. The handle at a right angle to the body of the whistle. Parallels found on: http://whistlemuseum.com/2009/08/13/antique-bronze-whistle-england-medieval-period-.aspx This site attributes the style to the medieval period, however the metalwork and production appear to be consistent with a post-medieval style.

An incomplete cast lead whistle of modern date. The whistle is a hollow cone with open apex and a sub-triangular section removed to act as the sound hole. A casting seem is present along the two sides of the whistle and it is moulded with a design consisting of two ovate elements, giving the appearance of eyes. To either side of the "eyes" are two semi-circular designs which is repeated in retrograde on the bottom just in front of the sound hole. The metal has a mid greyish white colour and is worn. A complete circular biconical cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. AD1200-1600. The lead weight is flat biconical in cross-section with a rounded base and top. It is decorated with an erratic criss-cross pattern on both sides. The edges on both sides are decorated with large circular pellets giving the rim a bulgy look. This, however, may have improved the spinning motion of the spindle whorl, similar to modern spinning tops which have a thickened or bulging edge. Lead weights like these are common finds…

A medieval, shield shaped lead weight dating from 1350-1500AD. There is a raised, central field containing a device that is too worn to decipher with any degree of certainty, but is probably a fleur-de- lys. The weight is 41.7mm long, 31.2mm wide and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 109.66gm. Similar weights are illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 41-42.

A complete cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is conical with a wide circular base which tapers to a narrow apex. A central perforation runs longitudinally through the weight. There are no marks or decoration present on the object and there are no signs of an attachment loop. The metal is a light brownish-white colour and is worn. The weight is 15.1mm tall, 14.2mm in diameter at the base and weighs 14.2g. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and may date from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

Medieval to early post medieval cast lead alloy, or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl, biconical with the same decorative pattern on each face. This decoration takes the form of a series of raised lines forming a pattern of roughly pentagonal cells with central raised dots. The weight has a circular perforation through the centre. It has an external diameter of 26mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 11mm. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fis…

Small lead, or lead alloy, square, probably a weight, stamped on the flat side and with chamfered edges on the unmarked side. Faint impressed inscription 'XIR' surrounded by dotted circle. The style of the inscription suggests an 18th or 19th century date. Measures 15x15mm

Cast lead-alloy or lead weight, probably a Medieval spindle whorl. The weight appears to have seen a lot of use as there is a great deal of wear. It has a worn pattern and damage to one side. Diameter of central hole is 11mm. Overall diameter 22mm. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perforation (ibid.). It is possible, therefore, that this lead weight is a spindle whorl…

A small pyramid shaped lead standing weight. It has no suspension loop. The weight has a grey patina. A potential alternative use for a pyramidal object of this size and shape is a gaming piece, but weights of this size and shape are known and is a more likely use. Compare NARC-3328B4 and page 33 of Biggs and Withers. It is probably Medieval or Post Medieval in date.

A complete cast lead alloy trade weight of Medieval date. The weight is shield shaped and has a worn design on the front face of a fleur-de-lis. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Both side of the weight have been repeatedly stamped with the letters "R S". These may express ownership, or may indicate that the weight was checked and approved for use at a certain time. The metal is grey and worn. At 3.81oz, this was presumably intended as a 4oz weight. Similar weights can be seen in Biggs, p.43 which discusses how lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the aver…

A lead alloy possible weight which has been made by pressing a jetton into the lead. The jetton is a rose / orb type, but the legends are not legible. The weight is sub-circular and one face of the jetton has been impressed into each side, making in effect a very thick lead alloy jetton with the design in reverse. At 30.3g, the weight is just over 1 oz, so it is possible that it was intended to be a 1oz weight with the jetton making an official looking design. Alternatively, the lead could have been used to practise cutting a coin die, or may have been intended as a crude replacement …

A complete cast copper alloy cup weight of medieval date. The weight is circular in plan with sides which taper from the top to the base giving a sub-trapezoidal profile. Around the top of the rim are a total of 20 punched ring and dot motifs and the rest of the object is undecorated. The metal has a dark greenish-black patina and is worn. The cup weight is 24.5mm in diameter, 9.1mm tall, 3.1mm thick and weighs 14.1g. This is most probably a single example from a nested set of differing sizes and weights which were used to weigh gold and silver in the form of coin, small objects or …

The weight is 41.4mm long, 27.2mm wide, 14.4mm thick and weighs 105g. Lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. However with various qualities of workmanship and numerous designs employed over a long period of time it is not possible to date th…
