Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Gold and cloisonné garnet object. The backplate is pierced by two small relatively neat circular holes and two more ragged and irregular holes, all of which are pushed through from the front and none of which are in th…

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead bag seal of post-medieval date. The seal is circular in plan with small holes running through its length. The seal is decorated on one side with crowned arms of three castles and on the reverse with a crowned "I" above a fleur-de-lis with one more to either side. John Cherry states that the fleur-de-lis suggests a French origin for the object and Tours in France has three castles on its shield and a flourishing silk industry. The seal is 16.6mm in diameter and 3mm thick.

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy pilgrim's badge or brooch of later medieval date. The brooch appears to depict a seated or knelt robed figure carrying a lamb, or possibly a child in one arm. This figure is possibly on a boat but the badge is too worn to see. There is a small rounded projection at the back but it is not pierced. The badge is 24.4mm long, 20.8mm wide and 2.2mm thick. There is a possibility that this badge depicts the Virgin and child, the head of the child may be broken off and missing. If so it may be variation of Our Lady of Willesden of which there were large numbers of badge…

Object type: BRICK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of Post Medieval ceramic brick probably dating from the late 16th to 17th century. The brick is handmade by clay being pushed into a mould leaving characteristic lenses in the clay. Its size is similar to a standard brick size introduced in a charter of 1571, and it has no frog. These were first introduced in about 1690. However, it may not be a standard size so it could date from other parts of the Post Medieval period.
