A cast copper alloy strap fitting or possible hinged component, possibly of Roman date. The fitting comprises a flat strip, 2.68mm thick, which widens outwards at one end, in both planes, where it is pierced by an iron rivet. There is also a rivet piercing the narrower end. At the wider end there is a projecting loop set at ninety degrees to the strip.

A corroded cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount, small and sub-hemispherical in form. The central lobe features four deep transverse lines, within which finer longitudinal incisions, all quiet crude. One of the two smaller, angled perforated side lobes retains their rivet; they are recessed on the lower surface. The object is similar to artefacts illustrated in Read (2001, 23; fig. 12) and Egan and Pritchard (1991, 214; fig. 134) which are dated to the second half of the fourteenth century. This artefact has corroded to a dull, dark-grey colour with patches of lighter corrosion product.

A flat sheet copper-alloy lozengiform mount (strap fitting) of medieval date. The upper surface is decorated with an incised rockerarm saltire within a lozengiform border. There are two rivets holes located just above the horizontal division of the mount. The artefact now has a variable green patina largely overlying dull red-brown colour metal. A mount with this decoration can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 17; ref. 124), although it is thought safer to offer a wider date range than that suggested by the author. A similar artefact is depicted in Bailey (2004, 95; ref. 12.14) and…

A complete but corroded cast copper-alloy 13th- or 14th-century medieval bar-mount with pendent loop. The pendent has been bent up such that it now abuts the bar mount and the two are now corroded together where they meet. The upper surface of the bar mount is rectangular in plan with bevelled sides. It is riveted on to a sheet loop which narrows at its base and is folded back on itself, terminating in a squared off stop which has a punched hole which is joined to the front section of bar (and, originally, through the belt) by a single copper-alloy rivet which survives. A rivet hole a…

A corroded cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The mount is sub-trapezoidal in plan with an incurved (V-shaped) upper edge. It tapers towards the inward-turning hook, now misaligned. A broadly oval loop is retained by the hook. The mount is shallowly convex. It features two, unaligned rivet holes, one towards the upper edge, the other just below the centre of the plate, both off centre. The upper hole contains the corroded remains of an iron rivet. There is a transversely incised line above the hook. The copper alloy is covered in light green corrosion product ove…

A corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The mount is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a cusped upper edge. It tapers towards the hook (now missing), widening slightly just above the hook. The recurving hook has been squashed inwards at its tip. The mount is broadly flat with slight bevelling on its upper surface. It features two iron rivets, one towards the upper edge, the other just below the centre of the plate. Much of the lower rivet survives corroded in place. The mount has corroded to a red-brown colour overlain with patches of large light-green…

A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount, elongated with a central circular element. The central lobe has a truncated, flat top and central circular perforation. The arms are semicircular in cross-section with a flat lower surface. One ends with the vestiges of a circular terminal, perforated to take a rivet, and bent down as a result of old damage. The other terminal has broken off. The artefact has corroded to a mid-grey colour. The object is similar to artefacts illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 214; fig. 134) which tend to date from before 1350 AD.

A cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount with hemispherical central lobe (c. 14th century AD). The central lobe is solid and is plain on its upper surface. The bars are more elongated than some other contemporary examples; they narrow gradually towards their terminals. Each terminates in a small side lobe which is perforated and recessed on the lower surface; neither of the rivets survive. The artefact now has a dark-grey/green patina with diagonal file marks on the lower surface. For a similar 'solid' bar mount see ref. HAMP-C16BB7 on this database.

A Medieval (1250-1400) copper alloy bar-mount with pendent loop. Together both measure 19.42mm in length and weigh 1.26g. The pendent loop is a simple circle in shape and 11.65mm in diameter (internal 7.55mm). The bar-mount is 11.39mm in length and 6.12mm wide, with a constriction at the point of suspension 2.68mm wide. The reverse is shortened and 7.87mm long. It is mostly the width of the constriction, widening to 5.83mm at the end. This has a central piercing 1.52mm in diameter, in line with one to the front of the bar-mount, 1.3mm in diameter and off-centre. The front is decorate…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable 16th century date. The fitting is hollow with a D-shaped section and comprises a body with a hooked extension. The separately-attached backplate is largely missing. Decoration, as is typical for these fittings, comprises double-stranded diaper pattern inlaid with niello. Similar decoration appears on contemporary metal-framed purses with which these fittings were probably associated.

A complete copper-alloy strap fitting of medieval to post-medieval date. The strap fitting is broadly triangular in plan and tapers towards the tip, the end of which has been rolled inwards and is touching the main body of the strap fitting. The top of the strap fitting has a rectangular perforation with a collar just below before the artefact tapers towards the tip. There are the remains of two small adjacent circular iron rivets, iron corrosion is visible on both faces in the surrounding area of the perforations.

A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-slide with a pair of short pointed internal projections. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape with slightly rounded corners. The artefact has a slightly rounded projection on the outer face. The projections lie closer to the inner edge. A complete cast copper-alloy strap-fitting of post-medieval date. The mount is symmetrical in form made up of a three sections arranged in a row: a small central oval body which contracts slightly at either end before expanding into broadly circular terminals. The upper surface is slightly convex with two transverse ridges at the junctions of the body and terminals. The lower surface is flat with two pointed spikes, missing their tips, projecting from behind the two transverse ridges. Similar mounts can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 36; fig. 21).

Another such strap fitting can be found on this database, ref. HAMP-461517, and also illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 129; ref. 1467). An incomplete and bent cast copper-alloy openwork sword belt fitting of Post-medieval date, the artefact is probably the reverse plate of a sword belt fitting. The openwork plate is sub-rectangular in plan with moulded edges. In the centre there is an asymmetrical 'X' openwork design. Either side of the open work there is a perforation to hold a rivet, one survives. Protruding from the lower edge of the back plate are the vestigle remains of two oval loops, which are missing due to old breaks. Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The openwork strap fitting is irregular in plan. The overall decorative design consists of an openwork square at the tip adjacent to an old break. Below this is a broadly oval expansion which terminates in a circular knop. The oval expansion is concave on the reverse and the openwork square is flat. There are two sub rectangular projections which extend from either end of the oval expansion. The strap fitting has been bent outwards slightly.

A damaged fragmentary cast copper-alloy post-medieval strap-fitting: a strap hook with integral loop (17th century AD). This one-piece fitting is moulded at the front and flat the rear. It consists of an oval plate, broken at one end before a collar beyond which a large blunt hook would have been located. Beyond a transverse collar with single groove at the other end is a circular loop, now broken through and with only vestiges surviving.
