Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete, corroded and damaged copper-alloy medieval sheet buckle plate. It is broadly rectangular in plan and all that remains is a single half, broken at the weaker tabs at the frame end and abraded through a perforation at the other. There is a central notch for the pin, which is flanked by two rectangular projections, the tabs, which would have folded round on themselves and extended into the other half of the fold. They provide a recess for the frame. The artefact has a mid-green patina with patches of off-white corrosion product. The attachment end has been bent downward…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy rectangular frame from a single-looped buckle or a clasp of medieval date. The frame has slightly convex sides, with transverse ridges in from each corner. The moulded outer edge is narrowed at its centre to possibly accommodate the original folding sheet or roller which has now been lost. The frame's bar is also narrowed and offset. As the plate (and pin) is missing it cannot be established whether this frame was from a buckle or a clasp. For rectangular buckle frames see Egan and Pritchard (1991, 96; fig. 61), and for clasps see ibid. (118; fig. 77). The frame ha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of probably post-medieval date with pin and plate attached. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface and on the pin bar; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section with the pin still attached (L.: 18.7mm), and with the sheet plate looped around it. The pin is of thick wire construction and has been bent to one side following old damage. It has corroded to a dull red/brown colour. The plate is formed of a s…

A small cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing part of its corroded iron pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is shallowly bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle frame has a mid-/dark-green patina. Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 341), but as the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, plain copper-alloy sheet rivet which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The upper part of the object is sub-rectangular in form (L.: 14.0mm, W.: 11.3mm), approaching hexagonal, which is attached to another flat sheet (L.: 17.7mm, W.: 16.5mm), possibly part of the vessel, using two small triangular ends. These have been pushed through this flat sheet of metal and then the two ends have been bent back to secure the rivet in place, like the form of a modern 'paper-clip'. The object has a mid/dark-green patina with small patches of off-white corrosion prod…

A corroded cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, incomplete in as much it is missing its pin. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in pointed lobes. The reverse is flat, and the frame bevelled internally and externally on its upper surface. This latter is decorated on each outer edge by a very worn five-petalled rosette with three outer petals and three inner. Viewed in profile one of the loops have been bent upwards slightly, and another downwards, as a result of old damage. The pin bar has also been raised slightly at the centre. The buckle has corroded…

An extremely bent, early-medieval (mid 5th- to 6th-century Anglo-Saxon) small-long brooch. This incomplete brooch is cast in copper alloy, with traces of an iron pin corroded within the lug. This brooch has been severely bent so much so that the arched bow is so flat that it can sit on a flat surface. The head and foot are bent almost at right angles to the flattened bow, their upper surfaces now facing. The brooch has a rectangular head-plate with rounded corners to which has a incised border of double V-shaped stamps, with small broken annulets at the apex of each 'pyramid'. The …

A squashed and fractured medieval copper-alloy thimble of sheet construction. The thimble is domed with a rounded top; it has been squashed from both sides, and cracked at two main points causing elements to overlap slightly. The small, circular drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral to the sides in a regular fashion. On the sides the pits are arranged in vertical rows above an incised border at the base. The thinness of this thimble might suggest that it was used for light duty work. The bare circular patch on top of th…

A seemingly complete post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of mid/late 17th-century date. The disc is a four-disc alnage/subsidy seal from the county of Yorkshire. All four discs are sub-circular, with the outer discs smaller protrusions of the inner ones rather than properly defined and separated circles. Discs 1 and 4 are seemingly plain with the integral stud from Disc 1 being hammered over Disc 4 in a crude L shape. Disc 3 bears a large initial 'K' in an inner circle around which the legend '* COMIT . YORKE' ('county of Yorkshire'). For another Yorkshire seal apparently of the same …
