Incomplete cast tin alloy hawking whistle, cylindrical in profile and circular in section, with two raised ribs which run around the circumference of the barrel of the whistle, on either side of the semi-circular sounding hole, which has since broken to form a larger aperture. The upper end of the whistle tapers towards the neck and then expands into a spherical suspension loop that has a drilled circular hole which would have taken the lanyard or cord to suspend the whistle. At the opposite end, the mouthpiece of the whistle is also broken so that it is open and the 'baffle' is loose…

Broken section of a narrow bladed cobble, probably metamorphosed slate, rectangular in plan and profile, and oblong in section. One face has been ground to a smooth flat surface, as a whetstone facet, and there are scratch marks along the edge of the stone. This is one of a group of cobbles found in the same area, made of various materials, that were used as domestic artefacts such as mullers, rubbers and whetstones. All of these would be at home on a Middle Bronze Age settlement. Unfortunately we know insufficient about the range of stone artefacts used in Neolithic Cornwall to make …

Small bladed cobble, probably metamorphosed slate, oblong in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile, and plano-convex in section. One face has been ground to a flat surface, probably for rubbing or whetstone use, with some flakes having been removed along the edge of the stone. This is one of a group of cobbles found in the same area, made of various materials, that were used as domestic artefacts such as mullers, rubbers and whetstones. Flat tabular block of fine quartzite, sub-rectangular in plan, profile and in section. Both surfaces are waterworn with patches of iron staining and some shallow concavities due to damage. There are also areas of grinding, particularly on the base and the sides, where there are shallow grinding grooves, which suggest that it was probably used as a whetstone. This is one of a group of cobbles found in the same area, made of various materials, that were used as domestic artefacts such as mullers, rubbers and whetstones. Cast lead fishing weight, lozenge-shaped in plan, plano-convex in profile and triangular in section, with tapering ends, which have been pinched and perforated with ovoid holes to suspend the sting at either end, around the protruding rectangular knops. This weight was most likely tied into fishing nets, due to its size and shape, and these are commonly found in Cornwall, but are difficult to date.

Cast copper alloy trade weight from a stacking set, circular in plan with angled sides and a wide raised rim on the top. The recessed area within this raised border has a central incised circle surrounding a crown over the letters TRURO, which is a provincial mark that has been stamped over an earlier stamp, at about 9 o'clock, of a ewer, used in London until 1826 (Bailey, 2000, 42). Below the central stamp, at about 6 o'clock, is a square shield on its side with the sword of St Paul in the top left quarter. This was introduced in 1826 when new 'Imperial Standards' came into force (Ba…

Cast lead trade weight with '1/4 Ib' in reverse at the centre and a stamp of a letter above, within two concentric rings, beyond which is a legend of letters, the maker's name or the company name, within a circular border, which are too worn to be made out, and in reverse, but perhaps 'Q R' in one section and 'O L V' in another. The weight of the object is 65.26 g which equates to 2.3 ounces. These weights were made by using a good bronze or iron weight (with a rim) as a mould, into which molten lead was poured. They generally date from the 19th century, when the lead weights so pro…

A thick, plain wall sherd from a large urn of approximately 0.3-0.4 metres diameter. The exterior is complete and has a smooth finish with only a few fine grits showing but a developed network of fine surface cracks. The orangey red oxidised colour extends about half-way through the fabric which then remains dark grey brown to the interior surface. This has a leathery appearance and has been beaten to a dense finish with the larger grits below the surface causing local bumps on the otherwise flat interior . The clay contains fine up to 2mm corroded white felspar with a sorted addition …

A quite thick, decorated wall sherd from a large urn of approximately 0.3 metres diameter. The exterior is damaged from being exposed to rain and frost in the plough soil. It would have had a smooth finish with only a few fine grits showing in order for the herringbone pattern of plaited cords to be impressed. The sherd is crumbling with a developed network of fine surface cracks and the decoration only discernable in oblique light. The orangey red surface oxidised colour extends part way through the fabric which then remains dark grey brown to just below the orangey interior surface. …

Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a large bowl or cooking vessel with an internally bevelled rim that is semi-circular in section and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly to suggest a reasonably deep straight-sided bowl or a deep straight-sided everted rim, as seen on cauldrons, and the curvature of the rim suggests a large diameter of about 320 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 4.7 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 4 mm thick. Egan (2005) illustrates a similar example of a bowl fragment with a flared rim and straight…

Pottery body sherd of thin well-made clay with sparse inclusions of quartz. Any other inclusions are too fine to see with the naked eye, apart from tiny fragments of mica. The fabric is a mid-brown colour throughout the sherd. This type of fabric is seen in Early Neolithic vessels, dating from c.4500-2900 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

An upright, pointed rim sherd. The exterior has parallel horizontal incisions running between the breaks. The interior surface has a deeper incision apparently running circumferentialy in a spiral and terminating after one turn on this sherd, raising a cordon in the unhardened material. It was found in a group of Trevisker (Bronze Age) sherds eroding out of a 'hut platform' half way down a slope to a spring, overlooking St. Michael's Mount at Halwyn Farm. Nearby an Early Neolithic sherd (CORN-C79472) was found amongst late Iron Age pottery in ploughsoil. It may be that through traditi…

Pottery body sherd made of a coarse fabric with an uneven exterior surface that has several depressions caused by the erosion of large inclusions out of the matrix or perhaps seed impressions. The fabric has fine inclusions of pale felspars and mica with some larger inclusions of quartz added in. The exterior of the sherd is a mid-brown and in the interior more orangey-brown. This type of admixture fabric is found in Bronze Age vessels dating from c.2100 -1150 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

Pottery base sherd of coarse granitic ware made of admixture clay with large inclusions of quartz and granite. The fabric is a mid-brown colour throughout and there is a fracture running diagonally through the exterior of the sherd, where an oval section has spalled out of the sherd, which adds to its fragility. Pottery body sherd that appears to be a section through the pot with a moulded ovoid lug on the exterior with a finger tip impression below it which may not have been deliberate. This thick sherd is made of granitic admixture clay, so the fabric has inclusions of granite and mica and additional inclusions such as quartz not natural to the clay to make it an admixture. A wall sherd of fragile pottery; slightly abraded on its exterior, but with a dense and well executed decoration. The pot is uncurved in the long direction so the oblique pattern orientation is chosen as likely on the complete vessel. The panel of decoration is bordered by 2 close parallel lines of twisted cord. This finishes a panel of twisted cords orientated at right-angles and numbering at least 15 The clay composition has a base of small 1-2mm corroded white felspar with other small particles including angular black augite. This is likely a clay sourced from The Lizard area, Cornwal…
