Object type: BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy socketed sickle blade of Bronze Age date. Weight is 12.08g, length of the fragment is 46.69mm, width is 16.73mm and thickness is 3.59mm. The cross section is oval or a sub lozenge. The edges are quite chewed, but Cyril Fox lists parallels from the River Thames (Tilehurst, Berks.; Plate XXIV, no 5), Norwich (Norfolk, Plate XXVI, no. 12) which have a similar straight blade. Due to the fragmentary remains of this blade it is impossible to determine whether the sickle was laterally or vertically socketed. Most of these socketed sickles are part of the Ewart Pa…

Spearhead, plain leaf-shaped head, wings ribless with no grooves, and loops low down on the socket. Length 175 mm, maximum width of blade 58 mm, maximum diameter of shaft 20 mm, maximum width of loops 26 mm. The golden colour suggests it may be have been deposited in a wet context, rather than in peat where a black/brown patina might be expected (see Fontijn 2002, pp.40-41). Greenwell & Brewis (1909) Type IV, probably corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 5, Pennard metalworking phase, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1150 BC, or possibly early Late Bronze Age.

County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and abraded cast copper-alloy flat axehead of Early Bronze Age date. This small example is from the earliest bronze working traditions, dating from the centuries after c. 2000 BC. The blade terminates in a rounded cutting edge. Bevelling to create the edge is gradual. Beyond the edge the object narrows to a width of 16.65mm and is at its thickest, 7.6mm. The object remains a fairly constant width to the butt. It narrows very gradually, and then more obviously in the quarter at the butt end. The axehead has a rectangular cross-section with no side flanges as such; the surf…

Flint with cortex Possible Scraper, reused as a Gunflint, as postulated by the finder. Sub-rectangular flint, possibly shaped in Prehistory as a scraper or core to judge from the extent of light patination on three angular sides - the fourth side being cortex. Two of the angular sides bear impact scars which post-date the patina, showing these edges of the object to have been struck. The finder suggests this object may have been pressed into service as an ad hoc gunflint - it bears scant relation in material or finish to a professionally manufactured gunflint. Suggested date: pos…

Fragment (about 75%) of a knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC - c.1150 BC). The arrowhead is bifacially worked and sub-triangular in plan. The arrowhead originally had two round ended notches in the base, flanking the central tang with a barb at either side. One barb is missing the tip to a break, the other is completely missing due to a large break which has also damaged the side of the tang. The point is also missing due to a break. The tang appears to be distinctly wider and longer than the barb with a square en…
