Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably Roman (AD 43-410) copper alloy stud with globular head and broken and corroded iron shaft. The head is flattened at its apex and 15.43mm in diameter. The stud measures 22.37mm in length, 15.43mm in max.width and weighs 14.43g. The shank is square in cross-section beneath the head (c.6.5x6.5mm), thinning to the break (6.40x3.29mm). Similar large spherical headed studs or nails are recorded in Crummy (1981:115, no.2995) although these have copper alloy shanks. Crummy suggests these were used on furniture and are Roman in date.
