A complete lead alloy uni-faced token, dating to the Post Medieval period. Powell Type 2. This particular token has been bent and cut, which makes identification difficult. It has what appears to be the raised design of the capital letter T with a triangular casting spur to the left and two parallel lines to the right to let the lead flow out when it was cast. The reverse is plain. The token measures 21.33 mm in diameter, 2.08mm thick and weighs 5.9 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with letters or …

A complete lead alloy uniface token, dating to the Post Medieval period. Probably Powell Type 2. This particular token has been bent and cut, which makes potential identification of the obverse design difficult. It is possible that the raised design on the obverse is the letter H with a pellet above and below the cross bar of the H, but this cannot be confirmed postively. The reverse is plain. The token measures 21.52 mm in diameter, 2.70mm thick and weighs 7.0 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those wit…

A complete cast lead alloy Medieval or Post Medieval circular uniface token, c. 1250-1800 AD. Powell type 7. One side has a raised chequer or grid pattern with a pellet in the centre; the other side is plain. The token is larger than average and has slight damage to its rim, including what looks like a possible crude suspension loop added to the plain reverse face. Suspension loops are unusual for tokens from this period, so perhaps this allowed the token to be fixed to a particular object, similar to a cloth seal. It has a diameter of 22.62mm, 3.63 mm thick and weighs 7.2gms. Lead …

A complete cast copper alloy Medieval or Post Medieval circular uniface token. Probably Powell Type 22. One side is decorated with three criss-crossing lines, intersecting at a central pellet and creating six points. It is possible that this is meant to suggest a mill wheel or cartwheel and that in the case of it representing a mill wheel the external paddles aren't visible due to wear. The other side is plain. The token has a diameter of 18.37mm, 3.14 mm thick and weighs 6.7gms.Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; therefore they are difficult to date precisel…

Complete Medieval or Post Medieval cast uniface lead token. The token is a sub-circular disc; one side is decorated with a raised geometric design possibly including stylized lettering. The central part of the design consists of a X although the addition of an upright linear to one side and a horizontal linear to the other side may be intended to depict a ligated DE design. There are also three pellets in the design including one in the centre of the 'D' and one to either side of the centre of the X. A nearly complete cast lead alloy Medieval pilgrim ampulla, c. 1150-1350 AD. The ampulla is crushed but mostly intact, fashioned into the common 'amphora' form, with one of two original lugs at either side of the neck forming very small handles. The intact handle is bent against the surface of the ampulla and seem to be sub-triangular in shape; such objects were suspended from the wearer's neck by means of a chord or chain passing through the handles at the sides (Spencer 1998, 58). The outer surface of one side of the ampulla has traces of raised script, but it is impossible to read…

A lead alloy probably Early Medieval sword pommel dating from 400 - 700 AD. It is of "cocked hat" form with a rectangular base with a hump in the centre. A rectangular opening in the base would have housed the tang of the grip, and a hole through the hump would have been for the end of the tang with a cap or rivet on the end. The main panels have a raised border. The lead is patinated and scratched. The lead pommel may have had a decorative covering. This is the only lead example on the database. Most of the others are copper alloy, with some silver examples, and gold pommel caps from…

A small, roughly cuboid, lead alloy steelyard weight dating from the Medieval period. The weight has a domed peak and underside, through which an iron rod has been inserted that projects through the peak of the weight; it is now broken but would have likely formed a loop for suspension as well as aiding storage. The sides of the weight are decorated with cross hatching while the underside has four ring-and-pellet motifs arranged within the quarter arms of a cross. Lead weights, due to being a functional artefact, change little in style over time and as such can be hard to date accu…

The skull has clearly defined naturalistic moulding The moulded detail includes defined brow ridges above the eye orbits, pronounced zygomatic arches (cheekbones) and a well-defined mandible (jawbone). There is a small cylindrical projection at the base of the skull but it isn't clear if this was intended to be part of the spine or is a casting sprue. the heavily pronounced brow ridge possibly indicates that the skull is intended to be that of a male or possibly even of neanderthal form (which would…
