Description: Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class A, Type 5, broadly 9th century in date. It is convex-sided, and the entire strap-end is in the form of a stylised animal head without a body. The split attachment end retains two silver rivets with large circular heads; the attachment end is shaped around these and has a small point in the centre. The animal head has elongated triangular ears which terminate at the attachment end and can be read as scrolling around (although the 'scroll' is a rather rectangular raised area) to include the silver rivets and to form the bi-convex att…

A lead alloy probably Early Medieval sword pommel dating from 400 - 700 AD. It is of "cocked hat" form with a rectangular base with a hump in the centre. A rectangular opening in the base would have housed the tang of the grip, and a hole through the hump would have been for the end of the tang with a cap or rivet on the end. The main panels have a raised border. The lead is patinated and scratched. The lead pommel may have had a decorative covering. This is the only lead example on the database. Most of the others are copper alloy, with some silver examples, and gold pommel caps from…

A group of silver hammered coins fused together by corrosion. There are approximately 25-30 in total, but the condition of the coins makes it impossible to indicate the exact number. Only three of the coins have more than a fraction of one side visible, and even these are heavily worn and corroded, making a precise identification impossible. The finder discovered the coins in his scrap bucket in April 2010, but does not know when he found them, nor which county he discovered them in. The findspot could be Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, or Suffolk amongst others. Neve…

A fragment of a copper alloy brooch dating to the early Anglo Saxon period, almost certainly a small-long brooch. The fragment comprises most of the headplate, but almost all of the edges are broken. Its front is decorated with three ring-and-dot motifs which are placed at the top and at either side, roughly at the base of where knobs would have originally been. Traces of a U-shaped cut-out can be seen at the base on one side (the observer's left), and the straight break next to this is across what would have been the top of the bow. There is also a trace of what may be a double-U cut…

A copper alloy Early Medieval or later mount. It has a central domed area which is sub-rectangular, and the remains of four protruding tabs, only one of which is intact. This is flat and rectangular, with a rounded outside edge and a circular perforation for a rivet cutting through to the body of the mount. The other three have all broken off, leaving the semi-circular outline of the former rivet holes. The domed area is decorated with a human face. An incomplete and burnt cast copper-alloy fragment, probably from a long brooch of Anglo-Saxon date. The fragment is roughly rectangular in form with one complete side, the remaining three sides terminating in old breaks. The front face is extremely worn and corroded, but appears to have a band of decoration running along the complete (vertical?) side with an added white metal coating. Precisely what form the decoration took remains uncertain due to the preservation of the object. There is possibly a small semi-circular notch at the base(?) of the fragment.
