Iron arrowhead. Although it was probably originally socketed, the socket is now missing leaving only a relatively long solid tapering cylindrical neck below the blade. This neck is 10 mm in diameter at its lowest surviving point. The blade has straight sides and may originally have had small barbs as the lower corners are also incomplete. The blade is a pointed oval in cross-section, 5.5 mm thick at most, and is a maximum of 14 mm wide. The total surviving length is 45 mm; the blade makes up 28 mm of this.

Small iron hammer-head. In the centre is a sub-rectangular hole for the insertion of a handle. One end is conical and flares to an oval end measuring 13 x 16 mm. The other end is wide and flat and slightly downwards-curving, shaped like a large chisel or miniature adze. Not scanned due to its fragility. Date unknown.

Curved iron object, circular section shaft, diameter 4.5mm, probably broken at both ends. The curve is very reminiscent of a brooch bow and it is possible that this is the remains of an iron Colchester type brooch but it is not certainly so. The shaft appears to flatten slightly at the break at the top (as if forming wings, pin etc) but overall the taper is very slight and there is no indication of a catchplate at the bottom. Surviving length 43mm

Iron and copper alloy object, probably a copper-alloy mend from an iron vessel. The copper alloy forms a sheath, wrapping right around two faces of the rectangular-section iron fragment and coming a little way down a third (wide) face. At first sight it looks like a rim mend (cf. Egan 1998 fig. 135) but the wider faces are not curved along their length - instead, the complete shorter face is curved. It seems therefore more likely to be the flat handle of an iron skillet which has been largely encased (all apart from perhaps the bottom face) in copper alloy, and with one long side no…

Iron hammer head, with a circular eye (diameter 22mm) set within a slight expansion of the head. The striking face, which is slightly rounded and burred, is rectangular and is balanced by a sub-rectangular cross-pane, which is also slightly burred. Length 116.5mm, maximum width 45mm, maximum thickness 33.5mm, dimensions of striking head 34mm x 34mm, dimensions of cross-pane 28mm x 29mm. The hammer head is uncertain. The form of craftsmen's tools remained constant from the late, pre-Roman Iron Age through to the early twentieth century. Consequently, unless recovered from a demonstrably…

Fragment of a probable iron axe, with an oval eye set within a notably wide expansion. Half of the eye, the poll and the end of the blade are missing. The front face of the surviving part of the blade is straight, while the rear, although initially straight, begins to curve back, presumably to form a wide cutting edge. Unfortunately, the loss of the front of the blade prevents confirmation of this suggestion. The thickness of the blade narrows towards the missing cutting edge suggesting that, when complete, the blade had a triangular longitudinal section. Surviving length 159mm, maximu…
