Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Almost-complete lead cloth seal, 22 mm in diameter. Disc 2 is fragmentary, but a well-made stamp can be seen with a merchant's mark flanked with a possible T to the left and an A to the right. The mark consists of a figure 4 with long stem that runs between the T and the A to end in a lozenge. The lines of the 4 may be continued beyond the left-hand angle to form an oval above the T, and the horizontal line to the right may be extended to form a cross above the A. Disc 1 is more complete, but the only stamp that this has is the incuse initials OP. A clothier's, weaver's or searche…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Large, nearly complete lead cloth seal measuring (without connecting strip) 24 x 26 mm. Disc 2 is broken but mostly complete; it is stamped with a design of two rampant ?lions with their tongues and feet touching, perhaps combatant, with initials (TH?) beneath. All is contained within a beaded border. Disc 1 is apparently unstamped. Although the design looks heraldic, denoting perhaps an official seal, the initials may point instead to a privy seal of a clothier, weaver or searcher. Probably 16th or 17th century.

Complete cloth seal, 18 mm in diameter. Disc 2 is stamped with the facing figure of an angel wearing a dress with elbow-length sleeves and a two-tier pleated skirt, holding an object in either hand. The head and wings are almost invisible. There are hints of a beaded border but no inscription around. Disc 1 is stamped with an incuse R and a possible T or I on its side; these are both at the very edge of the disc. The seal is in good condition.
