Fragment of copper or copper-alloy slab, perhaps from a Late Bronze Age copper ingot, although compositional analysis would be needed to confirm this. Roughly drop-shaped, one face is convex and the other is more strongly concave; the irregularly broken edge tapers towards the concave face, making its surviving area small. There are small voids in the broken edge. Both faces are smooth, especially the concave one which feels quite polished. Mid to dark green patina. Maximum length 55 mm, maximum width 33 mm, thickness 14 mm.

Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Tip of copper-alloy double-edged blade. A marked arris exists at the end of the implement, but splays into a more rounded profile about 35 mm from the tip. The arris and one cutting edge are straight, but the other edge is curved. The edges are badly bent and damaged; there is a recent surface scrape on one face, with metal showing, but the rest of the damage may be much earlier. The blade is patinated to a mainly dark olive green colour, with some small paler areas of surface corrosion. It is probably the tip of a copper-alloy sickle, the complete shape of which is unknown. The…

Copper-alloy awl, 66 mm long and with a maximum cross-section of 9 x 8 mm, so unusually thick and squat. It has a short (c. 30 mm long) sub-square tang, with one face narrower than the others making the corners not properly right-angled. The end is blunt and rounded, perhaps through wear or perhaps through damage. The other half is longer and circular in cross-section, with a long pointed, tip; this has some recent damage showing the metal at the end. The patina is mainly dark brown/green. Slightly uneven surface. Probably (though not certainly) Bronze Age.

Object type: RIVET
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy rivet of Bronze Age type. Circular in cross-section, its minimum diameter is 7 mm; the shaft is slightly concave on all sides but one, swelling smoothly to either end. The convex ends measure 9 mm in diameter, and are set at a slight angle to the shaft so that their edges are closest (10 mm apart) along the straight side and furthest from each other (13 mm apart) on the opposite side. The surface is patinated a mid or dark brown; damage to one of the heads reveals green corrosion beneath. Probably from a dagger, knife, dirk, rapier or sword; middle or late Bronze Age.

Gold foil plated ring with silvery gold wire inlaid into the gold foil. The ring has a diameter of 15.5 mm and it is sub-square or sub-circular in cross-section, measuring 5 mm deep and 5 mm wide; the faces are most flattened near to the terminals. The ends of the ring butt right up against each other and are joined by corrosion from the core. A copper-alloy core is suggested by green corrosion products in two places, both on the interior surface of the ring; behind the terminals, and where the gold sheath has cracked on the opposite side from the terminals. Further damage to the gold…

Complete plano-convex copper or copper-alloy (not analysed) 'ingot'. Oval, with one end pointed and one end rounded, so therefore not of the typical circular 'bun-ingot' form. Irregular pitted surface. Mainly dark green patina on top, and pale/medium green corrosive products on underside. Some recent grazes and abrasion (agricultural?) showing bronze (rather than copper) colour on high points of top surface. 'Length' 153 mm, 'width' 91 mm, thickness 16 mm, weight 708g.

Head and part of shaft from a copper-alloy cup-headed pin. The head is circular, 15 mm in diameter, and is 5 mm thick, with a 2 mm deep recess in the top and a rounded underside. The recess has a pale green encrustation and its sides are crudely grooved, as if to key it for an inlay. The shaft is not quite central to the head; it is oval in cross-section and tapers from 3 x 4 mm at the top to 2 x 1 mm at the old break, where it may have worn thin. The shaft is bent at an angle and in its present condition the total length is 19 mm. Cup-headed pins are known from the late Bronze Ag

A possible fragment of copper-alloy spear head, the object is a half cylinder in shape, open at both ends, although it is not clear if the ends have been deliberately cut or were broken in antiquity and the edges have smoothed through time. On the outside of the cylinder is an integrally cast shallow sub-triangular section which may be the base of the blade wing.

Blade and part of socket from a bronze socketed axehead. Very little blade expansion on crescentic cutting edge, showing that it has received little re-sharpening. The cutting edge has a central oblique scar and multiple scratches, probably ancient. The axehead is patinated dark brown/grren all over, including the slightly worn break, with no obvious signs of deliberate hammer breakage; hammer breakage is common in late Bronze Age hoards.
