A silver denarius of Hadrian dating to the period AD 125 to 128 (Reece period 6). COS III reverse type depicting Roma standing right, left foot on helmet, holding spear and parazonium. Mint of Rome. cf. RIC II, p. 359, no. 160.
Richard Abdy comments that this coin seems to be part of a group of irregular hybrids. Barbarous hybrid denarii employing the Virtus type of previous period = HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P ~ COS III (Virtus stepping on helmet, r., holding spear and parazonium). Piercebridge SF.1097(A2+ bust); P.4709(A2+ bust) and P.4710(C2+ bust): both Paris specimens employ same rev. die.

Medallic As, depicting Hadrian (117-138).
Obverse description: Bust of Hadrian bearded and draped right. The hair and a short trimmed beard are rendered as tightly curled.
Obverse inscription: HADRIANVS AVG COSIII PP
[?]Reverse description: Bust of a man, unbearded and bare shouldered. The hair is similarly treated to the obverse bust, but the nose is slightly more hooked.
[?]Reverse inscription: HADRIANVS AVG COSIII PP
The object was reported as a coin, albeit one whose paired obverses and duplicated legend have not been encountered either by the finder or by Cliff Reeves, who has kindly researched this object. The formula COS III appears on coins of Hadrian from AD 119 onwards. Dr Richard Abdy kindly comments that he refers to such double headed coins as 'Medallic Asses', and that one side of this coin appears to be from a hitherto unknown die.

Incomplete silver denarius of Hadrian (AD 117-138), [HADRIANVS] AVG COS III P P which dates the coin to c.AD 134-138 within his reign, but the reverse is worn and the original surface missing, so it cannot be defined, apart from a central figure standing right with a tall structure to the right, perhaps a parazonium, or perhaps another figure but they are too close together for ADVENTVS AVG type.
