Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MODERN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete and rather peculiar copper alloy strap-end. It is 57mm in length and max 31mm wide. The central part of the strap-end is widest and circular. It has the remains of 3 upstanding rivets, which have been inserted through the backplate. Apparantly a rectangular piece crossed the strap end here, over the rivets, joining with the rectangular end projecting from the circular area (measures 21x20mm) and the other projection from the circular area, an animal head. Two long 'ears' project backwards to join the remains of the 18mm wide strip. Either side of this strip are two semi-cir…

Possibly medieval roughly circular (but irregular) chunky lead ?weight with a ?bird shaped impression on each face. It measures 29.8x26.7mm in diameter and is 12.7mm thick to one side and 10.4mm at the opposite side. It weighs 58.38g (2.06oz, 901.0gn). The bird design consists of a relatively narrow body with rather wider wings to either side, measuring c.18x11mm and 22x15mm. The smaller bird has a V-shaped wingspan while the other is more vertical. Perhaps this had a use in medieval design?

A Medieval silver band measuring about 90 mm in length, and 12 mm in width. The band is collared, the central section decorated with a series of engraved rectangles and zigzags. Placed within it is a single line of text, which reads +IASPAR X MELCIOR X BA(?)LTU(?)SAR signifying the names of the three Magi (Caspar, Melchior , Balthazar). The names of the Magi were invoked as an amuletic charm throughout the Middle Ages. The inscription on the band seems to be complete, though, occasionally, it can terminate in an additional phrase (such as ‘in God is all’). The band is …

Fragment of a papal bulla, cast in lead. The fragment represents about one quarter of the original, which would have been about 36mm across when whole, but now measures 35.2mm long, 13.7mm wide and 4.4mm thick. It weighs 14.4g and appears to have been deliberately cut. On the obverse, the face of St Peter is visible and the last letter of the legend, i.e. [S'PA S'P]E. The reverse legend reads A[---]/AN[---]/P[P---]. An inscription over three lines, the second line beginning with A, is most likely to belong to Alexander III (1159-1181), but could also belong to Adrian IV (1154-59)…

A composite Colchester-type brooch of very late Iron Age date. The surviving brooch comprises five parts; the missing spring and pin being the sixth. The largest part is the bow and side wings; the latter appear to have been spread out to their present position and on their inside faces there is evidence for the attachment of the spring in the form of small patches of possible solder, or its former position. On the underside of the bow is a hollow groove which extends along the whole length of the bow. Within this has been inserted a separate catchplate, and this still slides…

Copper alloy decorative two part fitting, probably a strap (or harness) fitting of Early Medieval date. There is a generally D-shaped loop formed by a curved element which is circular in section and thickens at the ends to form moulded zoomorphic terminals (L. 20.5mm. W. 21.7mm. Th. 4.5mm). The animals are related to those seen on Romanesque swivel fittings. The terminals are linked by a straight, narrow oval-sectioned bar. A cast copper-alloy square buckle plate. Only the upper plate survives, and is broken off at the fold. The plate is recessed for the frame and appears to have had a pin slot, although this is not clear due to the break. The main section of the frame is dominated by a large rectangular recessed area with moulded decoration within in the form of a figure moving left and looking back. The figure holds a shield, probably a kite shield, and a weapon which appears to be singled edged and is therefore probably a falcheon. Compare an example found in Winchester (Biddle 1990, 520, no. 1201)
