A large flint flake, with evidence of secondary working / retouch, probably dating to the later (upper) Palaeolithic period (40,000 -8,300 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. The ventral (reverse) face of the flake exhibits a small bulb of percussion; however, the wave like ripples from the blow cannot be seen. Above the bulb of percussion is a small striking platform. The dorsal (upper) face has also a number of scars where flakes have been removed. This has left the body of the flint flake with several dish-like scars. The dorsal also has two areas of cortex (the ou…

Lithic implement: Hazel Martingell notes: This Palaeolithic handaxe is, so far, the first from Halstead, Essex. It is a very nice patinated and rolled example. They can be dated to the time between 500,000 and 200,000 BP. It is 100.3mm long, 72.5mm wide, 37.1mm thick and weighs 258.10g. The flint is mid brown with lighter brown patches. There is beige- white patination to one side. A cobble flint with some flake removals was also found at this location and is possibly the early stages of production of a hand axe. However it is too undiagnostic to date accurately.

Bi-facially worked and symmetrical in plan, the implement has a pointed tip and a rounded butt. Part of the tip is lost. The flake removals cover the whole of both surfaces. It is slightly "rolled" and the patination colour on both faces is variable between a pale buff through to a pale orange. At the edge, on one face there is a later flake scar, the surface colour of which is much the same as the general patination. This implement f…
