Lead alloy human head or figurine. The head is oval and has a square sectioned neck which may have fitted into a socket on a larger object. The head is 53.6mm long, 23.6mm wide and 12.4mm thick. The reverse is flat with a groove down the centre. The front is convex and has moulded features. There is some representation of hair which seems to be wavy or curly, a high forehead, large oval eyes without any detailing, a long straight nose and a smiling closed mouth. The nose has similarities to the copper alloy head found at South Shields Roman Fort (Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984, page 226…

Both faces are decorated with five radial raised lines with three raised pellets in each angle. The median rib is thickened. The whorl is in good condition with a creamy yellow patina. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical and are decorated on both faces with raised dots and radiating or zig-zag ribs. They have been found in ploughsoil over the site of Roman b…

Part of a lead alloy toy in the form of a two dimensional woman dating from the Post medieval period. Only the triangular skirt survives. It is a flat sheet of lead which is 36.1mm long, 35.7mm wide and 2.4mm thick. The front is decorated with a lattice work border. There is a faint lozenge pattern on the reverse. The break at the waist is patinated and one corned has been crumpled and straightened again more recently. A similar but more complete toy can be seen in the Finds Research Group datasheet number 10 by Geoff Egan (1988) and it is dated to the seventeenth century.

A lead alloy circular pan weight which has a diameter of 40.3mm, is 6mm thick and weighs 71.3g or 2 and a half ounces. There are no visible marks or stamps on the weight. Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied …

A lead alloy stamp or printing block from the post medieval period. The stamp is a sub-cuboid shape with rounded shoulders before a short and squared tang which is rectangular in section. It seems likely that the tang would have fitted into a handle of organic material. The object is 23.4mm long, 13.5mm wide and 8.6mm thick. The face bears a design in relief of a large tulip shaped flower with two leaves at the base of the stem. The design is too fine for the object to be a seal matrix, as it cannot leave a clear impression in wax. This suggests that it was used with ink instead. The s…

A lead-alloy object which is probably a leg from a metal vessel. No parallel could be found for this piece and a date of late medieval to post-medieval is tentatively suggested. The attachment, located at the top, consists of an irregularly shaped flat plate with rounded edges and a sub-circular rivet hole. The leg itself angles downwards from the attachment plate and is roughly ovoidal. Both the upper surface and the underside appear to have cast decoration. The upper surface bears a vertical ridge with three equally spaced, shorter transverse ridges along it; the underside has a t…

One of the long sides of the long oval loop is wider and the external face is decorated with four longitudinal grooved lines. On the other side of the loop there is a smaller wider section.
