Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A late medieval or early post- medieval finger- ring, consisting of a flat hoop cast with the form of two clasped hands (a "fede" or friendship ring). Incised lines at the wrist of the hand probably indicate the drapery of a cuff. The hoop is decorated with lozenges alternating with rectangular panels and a central square panel engraved with a cross. The rectangular panels are cross-hatched. The finger-ring is silver-gilt and dates from the late fifteenth or sixteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies a…

Object type: LAMP HANGER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A roughly cast copper alloy cast triangular hollow openwork 'pyramidal' object 32.56mm in length. The object has a rounded apex loop which sits above a short collar. On each side are three unequal openings. The base is also open and has a rounded loop in each angle, each also pierced with a round hole for attachment. While there are no clear parallels this object can with some confidence be identified as a lamp hanger in view of its similarity to the wide range of three-armed lamp hangers of medieval date.

County: Surrey

A fragment of the frame of a large cast copper alloy rectilinear buckle of probable medieval date. The bar is missing, as is one top or bottom edge, and part of the outside edge. The frame has a projecting pin rest on which there is a series of transverse ridges, two closely set flanking a central groove, and one to either end of the projecting area. To either side of the pin rest the frame tapers, and is decorated with a ring-and-dot stamp. There is another similar stamp at the surviving corner. This corner also has a tiny projection to either side of the external angle. The date …

County: Kent

A medieval brooch, consisting of a hoop, triangular in section, set with a collett at the top accommodating a coloured stone and terminating in a pair of clasped hands. The hands were designed to hold a stone, probably a pearl, which has now perished. The two registers formed by the triangular sections are engraved with letters that read + PAR CEST PRESENT M VERWSRENTENS (By/with this present.....) The meaning of this (rhyming?) French inscription is unclear but it almost certainly signifies a gift between two lovers. The brooch is gold and dates from the thirteenth century. …

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A late medieval or early post-medieval gilded silver pendant, with a suspension loop at the top, a cabled border and a claw setting, which contains a black stone. The black stone resembles jet and is very distressed, but appears to have been carved into the shape of a scallop shell. There may be a central figure of St James but the damage is too extensive to be certain of this. Jet souvenirs were avidly collected by pilgrims to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela from the late Middle Ages. The scallop shell is the symbol of St James, who is venerated there. The pendant date…

A silver gilt finger ring of 'Fede' type. The ring is complete and its large diameter suggests it was for a male hand. The plain band is D-shaped in section and incorporates a pair of clasped hands. The separately-attached bezel is in the form of a quatrefoil which incorporates a heart against a field of crossing lines (both rather clumsily executed). Fede type rings are well known and a number of complete and fragmentary examples have been recorded under the Treasure Act (eg 2007T49, which has a crowned heart motif; 2007T107; 2007T342; and 2010 T158). This item is more than 300 ye…

A half noble of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and Count and Lord of Flanders, a.d. 1384-1404. This type of coin copies English nobles and half nobles very closely so based on the reverse legend this is a half noble. Obv: PhS DEI G DVX BVRG COM Z DNS FLAND Duke in a ship, holding a sword and shield with the arms of Burgundy (note stripes rather than lions alternating with lis in quarters).
