Circular copper-alloy disc inlaid with opaque champlevé enamel holding panels of fine millefiori glass, a component of a larger item; it dates somewhere in the period from 670 to 900 AD (and possibly beyond) but may well be 9th century. Cells to take enamel have been cast into the copper alloy (the champlevé technique), with raised walls between in the shape of a central cross with hollow T-shaped or stepped ends to the arms. Each T-shaped arm terminal originally had a square piece of millefiori glass set centrally; two of these remain, with square scars where the others are mi…

Brown ferruginous fine grained Sandstone possible ingot mould. Fragment of rock crudely shaped by the cleavage of flakes from its sides and base, probably adapting a naturally formed shape. The upper surface bears an oval depression of length 54mm, width 24mm and depth 24mm; the base of this hollow is slightly paler and duller than other surfaces. Though this cavity might be fortuitously formed, as by a fossil bivalve shell, its regularity may hints at artificial origin or improvement. Such objects were often improvised: a Viking Age example from Lurk Lane, Beverley was made from a fr…

A damaged copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date. It splits at one end to for a slot for the strap, but most of both plates are missing. The closed end is also missing and the sides are damaged. This makes it hard to determine the original shape and therefore the class. The front is decorated with niello in the grooves of an incised design. A pentagon shaped panel at the open end extends by curving lines down the centre of the body of the strap end. The design is unclear.
