Three flint blades in dark grey flint with paler mottling, probably Mesolithic to early Neolithic in date.
Blade 1: Proximal end of snapped blade. C. 5% of cortex remains on the left distal tip of the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion and a bulb scar remains at the proximal end of the ventral face. Straight snap at the distal end. It measures 20.4mm long, 10.2mm wide by 4.5mm thick and weighs 0.74g.
Blade 2: Distal end of tertiary blade. Thickened and irregular at the distal end where the blade has acted as a core refreshment flake, removing the irregular distal end of the core. I…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Tertiary flint blade with small area of retouch, probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in date. The bulb of percussion and a bulb scar remains at the proximal end of the ventral face. The distal tip is snapped off. there is short, semi abrupt scalar retouch down both edges on the dorsal face apart from a point half way down where a deeper percussion wave on the ventral face has thinned the flint. On the left edge this point has been emphasises by a retouched notch. The flint is dark grey-brown. It measures 27.1mm long, 14.8mm wide by 4.7mm thick and weighs 2.06g.

Proximal end of a snapped blade with retouch along the distal end, Mesolithic in date. The bulb of percussion and a bulb scar remains at the proximal end of the ventral face. Small area of short semi-abrupt retouch at the proximal of the right edge on the dorsal face. The distal end has been snapped with a notch from the left edge taking up about a third of the width. The remainder of the snap has been retouched with short, semi-abrupt retouch, creating a straight edge ending in a point at the distal right corner (seen form the dorsal face) . The flint is translucent mid-grey. It meas…

Probably a Mesolithic microlith: short length of snapped blade with retouch. The snap at the proximal end is straight while the distal end and right edge (seen from the dorsal face) have snapped all the way down, leaving only a short length of the dorsal end. There is short, abrupt retouch down the distal half of the left edge on the dorsal face. The flint is translucent dark-grey with paler mottling. It measures 18.4mm long, 12.1mm wide by 3.6mm thick and weighs 0.70g.

Proximal end of a flint bladelet, possibly Mesolithic in date (8300-3500 BC). The bladelet is trapizoid to triangular in section with prominent ridges down the dorsal face showing there were previous long parallel removals from the same direction from the core. The bulb of percussion is visible at the proximal end of the ventral face. There is a snap at the distal end. There is chipping along both edges. In the centre of the right edge (viewed from the ventral side) is a notch created several relatively large removals, possibly deliberate. Dark grey flint with paler mottling. 23.7mm l…

A partially patinated flint tortoiseshell core of Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The core is formed from a patinated brown flint that is circular in form and has steep unpatinated edge retouch producing the typical tortoiseshell core form. The unpatinated flint is probably part of an earlier lithic implement or core that has been subject to subsequent re-use, as evidenced by the unpatinated retouch. It measures 53.89mm in length, 51.42mm in width, 20.24mm in thickness and 61.90g in weight. Tortoiseshell cores such as this are typically of Late Neolithic date, c.2,500-2,100 BC. However,…

Elongated piece of light grey coloured flint, The upper part of the right margin appears to have been subject to light retouch, leading up to the distal edge which terminates as a sharp point. The proximal edge is uneven and rugged in appearance with the left margin appearing flat in places although the area around the medial is flat, possible strike point from a core ? This piece doesn't have an obvious dorsal and ventral face, appearing triangular in profile, definite retouch has occurred on one edge, possible use as a piercer, manufactured from a waste flake. Probable piercer.

Elongated piece of translucent brown coloured flint with some speckling in the material. Dorsal face exhibits a single medial ridge running from the left side of the proximal edge to the terminating point at the distal edge. The proximal edge is shallow and flat in appearance, plan view shows it to be curved, with a very small profile, blade like in appearance. The right and left margins both curve in toward the terminating point of the distal edge, which could be looked upon as a tang or piercer point. The ventral face is relatively smooth with some conchoidal rippling present in the…

Oval piece of dark grey coloured flint with off white inclusions. The dorsal face exhibits several ridges with negative scars, distal edge appears rounded and may have been deliberately manufactured. The right margin is more blunt than the left and could be classed as having been backed, there does appear to be evidence of retouch but it is slight. The left margin is more shallow and sharp in appearance. The proximal edge has been broken implying this implement was much larger. The ventral face is smooth in appearance and texture, some conchoidal rippling present in the surface. Possi…

Oval piece of flint which has been subject to intense heat, the dorsal face retains approximately 30% cortex covering which is reddish in colour, probably as a result of heat exposure. The flint itself is two tone grey in colour and exhibits faults and fractures throughout its surface. The cortex is smooth to the touch and typical of material associated with beach pebbles. The edges are ragged and uneven, no obvious indication of retouch along any edge although this could be hidden due to the damage caused by the exposure to intense heat. The ventral face is smooth in appearance a…
