Upper segment of a snapped blade which has been worked into a borer or awl of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan with a knapped projection off the lower corner. The cross section is slightly crested / lentoid. The bulb of percussion and striking platform can be identified on the reverse of the flake. The left hand edge has been significantly reworked, especially in the lower edge / corner of the blade. Here a V shaped knapped point projects. The point has been knapped from both sides with relatively neat and regular retouch being app…

A large flake like blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 - 3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face . Several areas on the blade have been reworked including the opposite end as several areas on the long edges - specifically a long irregular arc / crescent on one edge creating a deliberate scraping surface. The retouch is applied in neat regular rows with abrupt / direct retouch. The flint is a mid grey colour with a milky white coloured patina. The blade measures 37.9mm …

Two irregular flake like blades of later Mesolithic date (6000 -3000 BC). The blades are broadly rectangular in plan and have crested cross sections. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral faces of both blades. Both blades show areas of reworking; one on the corner the other along the long edge, creating crude scrapers Both flints are a mid grey colour with a milky white coloured patina. The blades measure 1. 23.9mm in length, 13.9mm width, is 4.9mm thick and weighs 1.21 grams. 2. 26.3mm in length, 13.9mm width, is 5.4mm thick and weighs 1.39 grams.

A notched flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. The opposite end has been reworked to form a scraper and one of the long edges has also received some reworking but this is not as regular as that seen at the tip. The opposite long edge has also been reworked with one large notch and two smaller ones. The retouch on the tip is applied in neat regular rows on the dorsal face, whereas the retouch on the side is all applied from t…

A pyramidal shaped core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC). The core is triangular in profile and irregular in plan. A number of distinct knapping platforms are present and there are several areas of multiple blade removals in a number of different directions .The flint is a light grey colour with a milky white patina and substantial area of cortex. The flint is also very coarse and there are a number of hinge fractures present. The core measures 28.7mm in length, 29.1mm width, is 26.3mm thick and weighs 24.49 grams.

Nine (9) blades of varying lengths and thicknesses of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The sections of the blades vary, some are triangular (crested) whilst others are flatter lentoid shaped. All have multiple linear facets on the dorsal faces and conchoidal fractures on the ventral. Some are snapped, others still possess their bulbs of percussion / striking platforms. The majority of the flakes are plough rolled and have thick white surface patinas. Some of the long edges have had limited retouch applied using direct percussion. A few flakes would be better described as chert -…

Small snapped coarse flint or chert blade or bladelet of later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). It has been struck from a core and has the generic crested appearance. The blade is snapped and shows no sign of retouch on either tip or long edges. The underside / ventral face shows conchoidal rippling. The blades measure 19.3mm length, 11.5mm width, is 2.5mm thick and weighs 0.53 grams.

A pyramidal shaped core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC). The core is triangular in profile and irregular in plan. A distinct knapping platform is present on the upper edge of the core with areas of multiple blade removals in a single direction around the edge. The small size of this core suggests that it was discarded as waste. There are areas of hinge fracturing near the base. The flint is a light grey colour. The core measures 25.4mm in length, 22.2mm width, is 20.6mm thick and weighs 14.63 grams.

Around the edge of the core fragments are areas showing multiple blade removals in several le different directions. On the ventral faces clear platforms of percussion and conchoidal ripples are present. The flint varies in colour being grey in one example and a milky white coloured patina in the other. The core fragments have a bulk weight of 3.57 grams.

Flint 'backed / blunted' microlith, formed from a snapped blade of probable Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The microlith is formed from a section of blade which has been snapped obliquely to form a point. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The upper left hand edge and oblique point has been reworked with regular evenly spaced flakes. It is likely that this microlith would have been set with several others into a tool, such as a harpoon, or multiple toothed blade. The flint is a light grey white colour. The microlith measures 18.7mm in length, 6.7mm …

Three blades of tertiary debitage (from the third / final phase of tool making) of Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The three blades are all struck on poor quality flint cores which vary in coarseness and colour, all being glacial or riverine derived, some possibly being chert rather than flint. All of the blades are irregular and have not been reworked / retouched. I have described these blade fragments as debitage as I believe that they were knapped to prepare the core for larger blades. The dorsal faces of some of the flakes show ridges and flake scars, the reverse faces show concho…

An irregular fragment of a core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC); from the irregular shape and the fact the core has been worked in several directions it is possible that this may be a form of core-rejuvenation flake. The flake is broadly rectangular in plan with a curved profile and irregular rectangular section. Around the edge of the core fragment are areas showing multiple blade removals in at least two different directions. On the ventral face a clear platform of percussion and conchoidal ripples are present. The flint is a dark brown grey colour with few flaws …

Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a crested blade or knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and has a sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is not present, the top of the blade has been trimmed and thinned, however conchoidal fractures are present on the lower (ventral) face. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. The long edges and ends have all been heavily retouched, especially the edges. The retouch on the left hand edge is most …

An irregular fragment from a core which has been worked in several directions to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex (10%) is present on one face. The fragment is heavily worn and the remains of at least one striking platform is present from which blades have been removed. There is no evidence of rejuvenation flakes or multi platform working. A complete 'snapped' flint blade of probable Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and triangular (crested) in cross section. The bulb of percussion and lower half of the blade have both been removed through snapping. The dorsal face shows three ridges (crests) where previous blades have been removed fro a core. The long edges have been rolled in the soil but there is no evidence of retouch. The flint is a mid grey mottled colour with large areas of mid cream grey coloured mottling. A large and complete flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500BC - 3000BC). The flint tool is formed on a flake like blade which is broadly crescentic in shape being a dark mottled tan brown colour. The bulb of percussion is present but trimmed on the ventral (lower) face. The section thickness varies with the area behind the bulb being thickest whilst the opposite end being relatively thin. The upper surface (dorsal) has a series of ridges, formed by the removal of other flakes from a large core prior to the creation of this blade - all these removals have bee…
