Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire

Lithic Implement: A single chunky blade fragment or possibly part of a multi-platform core. The object is sub-triangular in cross-section. The blade has been lightly retouched on each long edge and cars of earlier removals are evident running vertically along the upper face of the object. The flint is a dark to mid brown colour with a silky smooth patina. It can be dated from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period, (8300BC- 2100BC).

Two irregular fragments of a core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC). The fragments are broadly rectangular in plan , profile and irregular rectangular sections. Around the edge of the core fragments are areas showing multiple blade removals in several le different directions. On the ventral faces clear platforms of percussion and conchoidal ripples are present. The flint varies in colour being grey in one example and a milky white coloured patina in the other. The core fragments have a bulk weight of 3.57 grams.

Flint 'backed / blunted' microlith, formed from a snapped blade of probable Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The microlith is formed from a section of blade which has been snapped obliquely to form a point. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The upper left hand edge and oblique point has been reworked with regular evenly spaced flakes. It is likely that this microlith would have been set with several others into a tool, such as a harpoon, or multiple toothed blade. The flint is a light grey white colour. The microlith measures 18.7mm in length, 6.7mm …

Three blades of tertiary debitage (from the third / final phase of tool making) of Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The three blades are all struck on poor quality flint cores which vary in coarseness and colour, all being glacial or riverine derived, some possibly being chert rather than flint. All of the blades are irregular and have not been reworked / retouched. I have described these blade fragments as debitage as I believe that they were knapped to prepare the core for larger blades. The dorsal faces of some of the flakes show ridges and flake scars, the reverse faces show concho…

Three small incomplete snapped flint blades or bladlets of later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). These are both struck from cores and have the generic crested appearance. All have been snapped and none show signs of retouch on their tips or long edges. The underside of each shows conchoidal rippling. One blade (2) has a complete bulb of percussion and the striking platform is present. The flint is a variety of colours ranges from white grey to brown. All is low grade with significant areas of inclusion; this type of flint is likely to have been procured from glacial and riverine s…

An irregular fragment of a core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC); from the irregular shape and the fact the core has been worked in several directions it is possible that this may be a form of core-rejuvenation flake. The flake is broadly rectangular in plan with a curved profile and irregular rectangular section. Around the edge of the core fragment are areas showing multiple blade removals in at least two different directions. On the ventral face a clear platform of percussion and conchoidal ripples are present. The flint is a dark brown grey colour with few flaws …

Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a crested blade or knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and has a sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is not present, the top of the blade has been trimmed and thinned, however conchoidal fractures are present on the lower (ventral) face. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. The long edges and ends have all been heavily retouched, especially the edges. The retouch on the left hand edge is most …

Two small incomplete snapped flint blades or bladlets of later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). These are both struck from a core and have the generic crested appearance. Both have been snapped and neither show signs of retouch on their tips or long edges. The underside of each shows conchoidal rippling but not evidence of bulb of percussion or striking platforms. One flake (the darker of the two) has a small area of cortex present. The flint is a mid mottled grey colour. The source of flint is difficult to ascertain; much of the local flint is procured from glacial and riverine sou…

An irregular fragment from a core which has been worked in several directions to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex (10%) is present on one face. The fragment is heavily worn and the remains of at least one striking platform is present from which blades have been removed. There is no evidence of rejuvenation flakes or multi platform working. The core is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky white coloured patina. The core measures 26.0mm length, 23.9mm wid…
