An incomplete cast copper-alloy ring, possibly a finger ring of late Iron Age to early Roman date. The remains of the ring are sub-oval in cross-section and only one turn is still intact; it is likely that both ends of the remaining band are broken. Traces of incised lines are visible on the outer surface of the band, in addition to traces of gilding in multiple places. The copper-alloy is of an even dark green patina. The ring measures 4.11mm wide, 3.03mm thick and weighs 5.47 grams. This ring was discovered in an area that has yielded a large quantity and array of finds dating t…

A copper alloy wire finger ring of Roman date. The hoop is constructed from a single strand of copper alloy that is circular in section. The ends of the hoop overlap and coil round each other twice to form an adjustable mechanism. A near identical example is published by Crummy from an excavated context at Roman Colchester (Crummy, 1983: no. 1756). The current example differs only in that the two spirals are spaced further apart and the hoop is perhaps very slightly larger. The published example comes from a context dated to c.49-55 AD, suggesting a 1st century AD date for the curr…

A fragment of Roman (AD 200-300) copper alloy finger ring with intact blue glass intaglio, consisting of the bezel and shoulders to either side only. Measures 20.93x13.84x8.31mm and weighs 2.4g. The shoulders are flat and c.1.2mm thick. The bezel widens to accommodate the setting, which is oval and 13.14x12.43mm. It is 3.44mm high. The intaglio sits slightly proud of the recess (4.20mm). It is decorated with a crude standing figure formed from simple grooved lines. The figure has become so debased that it now simply resembles a pentagonal base with a 'T' extending from its apex, up…

An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring of Roman date. The hoop of the ring is incomplete with roughly half of its diameter having been lost to old and worn breaks leaving wide shoulders to either side of the bezel which taper towards the breaks. The bezel itself is oval in plan and is raised prominently from the hoop. It is separated in to four quarters each of which is recessed and infilled with enamel. Two of the recesses bear traces of red enamel and the other two hold yellow enamel. A central recessed circular depression is also present and appears to have also been infilled …

An incomplete Roman (AD 200-300) copper alloy finger-ring missing its setting, and consisting of the bezel, one shoulder and a small section of hoop only. It measures 14.71mm long, 9.40mm tall and weighs 0.73g. The bezel is oval in shape and measures 10.69x8.73mm. It is 1.59mm deep. The surviving shoulder is initially flat and 3.94x1.15mm next to the bezel, but with a moulding triangular in cross-section and 3.57x2.62mm as it drops into the hoop. The moulding has narrowed and thinned to 1.90x0.95mm at the worn break (D-shaped in cross-section).

A Roman (AD 200-410) copper alloy finger-ring of Henig Type IX (Guiraud type 9a), measuring 21.75mm in diameter (internal 18.80mm) and weighing 2.84g. The finger-ring is polygonal in profile with eight external facets (octagonal) and is circular internally. Each facet is rather worn, flat and plain and there is no sign of any surface treatment. Henig (1974, 50) suggests that polygonal rings are a third century type while Crummy (1983, 49, ref. 1788) notes that polygonal hoops tend to be fourth century in date. Johns (1997, 41) also suggests a slightly earlier, Middle Empire range.
