A complete Roman cast copper-alloy mount (or handle) dating from 43-410 AD, in the form of a small figurine in the form of a figurine of a male banqueter. Above the waistline the banqueter is naked and below the waistline the body is draped in a mantle which is represented by cast and incised lines. The figure is reclining to the left on his elbow with the right leg raised and the head facing forward. The facial features are vague and may have eroded and worn. Incised lines on the rear surface suggest that the banqueter is reclining on a couch. The base of the figurine has a rough …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy handle from a vessel of possible Roman date. The top of the handle where it joins the rim of the vessel survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. It is rectangular in form, oval shaped in section, expanding towards the rim of the vessel where it is triangular in form. A transverse groove is visible on the inner edge of the vessel end, indicative of the means of attachment to the vessel. The surviving fragment curves to an angle of 90 degrees, where it terminates in old breaks. All exterior surfaces are extremely worn, h…

A fragment of cast copper-alloy vessel, possibly dating to the Roman period. Only a short length of what appears to be a base ring survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The fragment is rectangular in form and section, with a flaring foot ring that narrows toward its base. At the top of the footring are the remains of a vertical wall and curving floor of the vessel, both now incomplete due to old breaks and at an angle of 45 degrees from one another. This give the fragment a Y-shaped section where the foot, wall and floor join. A transverse groove …

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast circular base fragment from a cylindrical vessel of composite construction with a 55mm diameter. The object has been torn, losing about one third of its area, and either introducing or emphasising a slightly bowed or concavo-convex profile. The convex face appears slightly paler around its edge, to a depth of circa 4mm, which appears to indicate where this element was formerly joined to a vessel wall - of what material is uncertain. The size of this object is close to that of an Anglo-Saxon 'work box', a form of cylindrical copper alloy containe…

Roman copper alloy ovoid vessel escutcheon with integral loop set at right angles, flat slightly curving inner face and convex outer face. There is now no trace of the solder on the inner face which would have attached the object to the vessel. Below the springing of the loop a human bust has been rather crudely executed in counter-relief by engraving. Height 42.5mm. Width 30.5mm. Dates to the 1st - 4th century.

Copper alloy vessel spout. Cast and lightly facetted tube of thickness 1.7mm and external diameter 11.3mm with the naturalistically modelled head of a lion with jaws agape at one end, and a ribbed collar decorated with bordered Greek Key ornament at the other. A round aperture of diameter 4mm is set behind and between the teeth. The muzzle, eyes, teeth, mane and ears are crisply modelled, even within the mouth, as is the key ornament at the other end. This piece is probably from a metropolitan (i.e. Gaulish or Italian/ Roman) workshop, as is indicated by the quality of modelling, the …

A copper-alloy handle attachment from a Roman metal vessel. The artefact takes the form of a moulded representation of a human bust, with the circular loop attachment extending upwards from the top of the head. The face is executed in high relief and is angled to the figure's right. The face is of cherubic appearance, with full, rounded cheeks, recessed pellets within pointed oval grooves for the eyes, a low nose and short, closed mouth. An inverted 'u-shaped' groove frames the face, separating it from the hair, which is short and has suggestions of straight, parallel grooves. Benea…

Fragments of a cast copper alloy bowl decorated with champlevé enamel, three fragments survive, one, bearing the remains of the rim, is folded back on itself, all three join, but are distorted, making it impossible to determine the original dimensions of the vessel but it is clear that it was originally globular and small, with a diameter comparable to that of other bowls in the series (see below). Most of the enamel is now missing but the champlevé cells show the decorative scheme. This consisted of a series of 37mm diameter, circular panels set around the circumference. Each of th…

Possibly a cast copper alloy attachment from a Roman or medieval vessel dating from c. AD200-1500. The dating, however, should only be tentative at this point. The mount is crescent-shaped/semi-circular with two perforations for rivets towards the outer corners. There is a small loop in the top centre which is very worn - and worn through on the outer side. It is suggested here that this mount comes from a Roman or medieval cup or smaller vessel. The loop would have been connected to one loop of the handle.

A cast copper alloy object. Rectangular in plan, with a rectangular collar and a small projection extending at a perpendicular angle from the collar as a continuance of the edge of the main rectangular plate. The object has a diagonal uneven break from the collar to half way deon the body of the main plate, obscuring what seems to have been the functional portion of the object. The reverse is plain, but uneven with raised bumps. The edges are rounded and the object as a whole seems well worn through use. An irregular cast copper alloy unidentified artefact or unknown date. From what remains it seems most likely that this fragment is either a miscast pin or possibly a fused brooch, both possibly of Roman date. The artefact is irregular in plan being broadly cylindrical in shape expanding to an irregular shaped mid-point and tapering to an irregular point. If it were a pin, then the mid-point would be the head with a casting sprue / miscast waste above and a relatively well formed tapering shank below. The shank is well cast and the patina is relatively smooth. The area above the head i…

Small cast copper alloy unidentified object, probably a fragment of a lid or side of a box dating from the Roman or later period. Due to the burnt-looking surface and the findspot we can possibly date it to the Roman periodm i.e. c. AD100-300. The original artefact may have been roughly square or cruciform in shape. It probably slotted into the other side pieces. The fragment is undecorated on what looks like the inside or underside, but there is some decoration remaining under the burnt surface on the obverse: hatching or cross-hatching.

An unidentified artefact of probable Roman date, possibly a fragment of an early bow brooch. Very little survives; it is cast in one piece being sub-rectangular in plan and U shaped in cross section. The upper edge has a sub-rectangular projection extending from one edge. If this were a brooch fragment then the U shape is likely to be the groove to hold the spring and the projection the bow - which would be strip like. The metal is a mid - light green colour with a dusty patina. The artefact measures 12.2mm length, 20.2 mm width is 5.3mm thick and weighs 1.93 grams.

A cast copper alloy artefact of unknown function of late Iron Age - Roman date, more likely of Roman date (100 BC - 250 AD). The artefact may be best described as a handle being sub-triangular in shape, irregular in profile and sub-rectangular in section. The profile is likely to be distorted in the soil - in shape it is similar to a bow brooch but is much heavier than most examples seen. It is therefore more likely to be either a handle or a decorative mount. The artefact tapers from a relatively wide and thick terminal to a rounded foot knop at the base. The section also tapers in t…
