A probably Roman (AD 43-410) copper alloy stud with globular head and broken and corroded iron shaft. The head is flattened at its apex and 15.43mm in diameter. The stud measures 22.37mm in length, 15.43mm in max.width and weighs 14.43g. The shank is square in cross-section beneath the head (c.6.5x6.5mm), thinning to the break (6.40x3.29mm). Similar large spherical headed studs or nails are recorded in Crummy (1981:115, no.2995) although these have copper alloy shanks. Crummy suggests these were used on furniture and are Roman in date. A Roman (AD 200-410) copper alloy finger-ring of Henig Type IX (Guiraud type 9a), measuring 21.75mm in diameter (internal 18.80mm) and weighing 2.84g. The finger-ring is polygonal in profile with eight external facets (octagonal) and is circular internally. Each facet is rather worn, flat and plain and there is no sign of any surface treatment. Henig (1974, 50) suggests that polygonal rings are a third century type while Crummy (1983, 49, ref. 1788) notes that polygonal hoops tend to be fourth century in date. Johns (1997, 41) also suggests a slightly earlier, Middle Empire range.

A fragment of Roman (AD 43-410) copper alloy finger ring, consisting of the incomplete bezel only (missing some of its enamel setting). Measures 13.65x10.54x2.78mm and weighs 1.36g. It is oval in shape and recessed on both surfaces. One surface contains the remains of red enamel, the other a white coloured paste that might represent lead solder used fix the setting. This would suggest the bezel was double sided. In addition, there are no wear marks at either end suggesting a break with the hoop.
