Fragment of gold post-medieval finger ring. The fragment is the bezel of the ring. It is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in section. It appears to be hollow. The bezel is set with a rectangular cut red stone (or possibly red glass). The stone in the second setting is damaged. The sides of the bezel are decorated with raised lines, which form scallops. Beneath these, on all sides is a border of tiny dotted or dashed indents. Around the bottom of the bezel is a slight flanged rim. This is decorated with a running motif of raised hollow squares and solid dashes. The underneath of …

The centre is keyed to take enamel, and a small part retains some white enamel. This central scallop is surrounded by an inscribed band which reads: "* DUM VIVO SPIRO" in black-letter (2nd V inverted). This tiny gold ring is inscribed inside: ‘Your absence is my greefe’ in lower case script, and was presumably a gift between separated lovers. There is also a maker’s mark, which is very close to Grimwade no. 1731 (Grimwade, 1976) and can almost certainly be identified with it. The mark is that of John Vickerman, small worker, entered 20 May 1768. This ring is mid 18th century and does not fall within the Treasure Act. The hoop is D-shaped in section and measures 17.7mm in diameter. It weighs 1.79g.

Late 17th or early 18th century gold mourning ring. The hoop is of D-shaped section. The exterior is engraved with a stylised skull flanked by triangular panels and cross-hatching within borders extending around the hoop. Both the skull and cross-hatching retain a substantial amount of black enamel. The interior is engraved with Roman capitals: M M, which retain small traces of black enamel. This inscription is likely to be an abbreviation of 'memento mori', rather than an individual's initials. The ring has an external diameter of 20 mm, the hoop is 4 mmwide and it weighs 3.3 grams. T…

An enamelled gold posy ring. This ring has a thin hoop with foliate decoration on the exterior bearing remains of red, green and white enamel. The interior bears and inscription: 'Let vertue bee a guide to thee', and a maker's mark, PR, within a double oval. This is a commonly found inscription that remained popular well into the 18th century. The decoration too is consistent with a date in the 18th century. The mark does not appear in Grimwade, nor is it recorded by T. Kent in his book on West Country makers. In the absence of an identifiable mark there is no evidence to date this rin…

An enamelled gold memorial ring. This ring with its monogram in gold wire beaneath a faceted stone, foliate ornament of the shoulder in black enamel and decoration in back and white enamel on the underside of the bezel, is a characteristic type of the late 17th and early 18th century. Examples in the British Museum bear dated inscriptions from around 1690 to 1730. In the absence of such an inscription or an identifiable maker's mark, there is no evidence to date this ring pre 1705. The stone is cracked (Judy Rudoe, British Museum, 10th October 2005).
