A sceat of series E, type 53. As noted in Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas, vol. 2,pp. 243-245, this is a rather rare series with, within England, different provenances which are suggestive of a continental origin. The present find adds to this diversity. EMC 2006.0099

A cast copper alloy, gilt Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch. The brooch has an angular rim, which is badly damaged but is otherwise flat and circular (maximum diameter 26.6mm. Its face bears a raised circle, just inside the rim within which is a long cross. Situated in each quadrant is an 'open heart' motif, with a pellet in the centre of each heart. These motifs are all raised from the surface if the brooch and are a light greyish-green colour. Gilding survives in-between the raised relief patterns. Almost 40% of the rim is damaged and there is some corrosion on the raised parts of the motif…

Penny of Henry II (1154-1189), Tealby or Cross and Crosslets Bust C (1161-1165). The moneyer is Ricard and the mint ends in N, begins with an upright. Only Canterbury and London are possibilities according to North's tables, but it looks much more like London according to the gap between the upright and the final N.

A long hollow, cylinder perforated lead weight, known as a standing weight. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a square section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been fishing weights dating from the Medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated. The weight is undecorated, but both ends are well rounded. The weight is complete. The lead is a light brownish-grey colour.

An unidentified object of unknown date. The artefact resembles the loop from a Bronze Age palstave axehead, but where one would expect the loop to join the axehead there appears to be a straight edge of metal and not a broken edge. The artefact is basically a loop with very corroded and broken edges. The loop is oval, rather than circular and at either end of the loop there is a slight projection (with broken ends), which suggests that this artefact was once part of something much bigger. The metal is very corroded and most of the original surface has been lost. The metal is a mottled …
