16th Portuguese medio real or chinfrao of Alfonso V (1438 - 81) of Portugal. These turn up in some quantity across England: According to Barrie Cook, it was issued in 1472, and demonetized (in Portugal, presumably) in 1485, but seems to have circulated in England as a half-groat and appears in hoards as late as the 1530s. They were probably the coins known as 'dandyprats' - see Barrie Cook's article in BNJ 64, at pp.72-4. It has a hole pierced near the edge at on side suggesting it was used as a pendant. [portugal]

A broken flint flake with denticulation along the left edge, probably produced using fingernail pressure. This is a fragment of a probable blade flake. It is coarsely struck, with an off-centre triangular cross section. On the ventral surface there is a long striking platform and shallow, scarred bulb of percussion. It has been broken at the distal end. There are flaking scars on the dorsal surface. Mid to light grey flint with low-gloss patina.

1 thick, secondary flake from a blade core. Dark grey flint with off-white mottles and a mid-gloss patina. Bulb of percussion on the ventral surface with a large scar. Several elongated, blade flaking scars on the dorsal surface. An area of pebble cortex retained on the dorsal surface. Possibly a core rejuvenation flake.

3 tertiary flakes of very similar pale beige flint with grey banding and a large, less siliceous area at one side. Although they do not refit, they could all be from the same nodule. All are irregular in shape and have a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and numerous flaking scars dorsally. The flakes have all been sruck in a similar way resulting in a broad flake with the bulb of percussion slightly to one side of the width. Dimensions: 29.5 mm x 31.5 mm x 8 mm, 28 mm x 32.5 mm x 10 mm, 20 mm x 15.5 mm x 4 mm (Weight below is the total)

A flint awl made from a tertiary flake. The bulb of percussion is present on the ventral surface and there are flaking scars dorsally. The distal end is angled to produce a point on the right side of the dorsal face. The right edge of the dorsal face has been steeply retouched to enhance the point of the awl. The awl has been re-used at a later date by shallow retouching on the left dorsal edge to make an end scraper. The patina in this area is less developed (mid gloss and no whitening). Mid grey flint with a milky white, mottled patina.

A flint thumbnail scraper. Small rounded edged scraper made from the proximal end of a secondary flake. There is a long striking platform and bulb of percussion on the ventral surface. The left edge of the dorsal surface is fairly straight and covered in nodule cortex. The right and distal edges of the dorsal surface have been fairly steeply retouched with the right edge being out-curved. Very pale grey flint with occasional darker grey mottles and a low-gloss patina.
