Object type: BEAD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy bead, possibly of late Iron Age-early Roman date. The bead is circular with a large circular hole in the centre (D. 6.5mm). The inner edge is flat while the outer edges are curved, so that the object is D-shaped in section. The object is also thicker on one side (Th. 3.2-3.7mm) and the outer surface is uneven due to wear and damage. Patchy dark green patina.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy plate brooch of Roman date. At each end the object forms a point. Extending from one point is a circular knop, and extending from the opposite end is an elongated pointed knop. The sides between the two pointed ends are damage so that their original shape is unclear. However, the moulded decoration on the upper surface suggests that, rather than forming a lozenge shape, the sides were straight. The upper surface has a plain border, then a raised element. This element follows the outline of the brooch at each end but has straight sides joining the two pointed ends. W…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy part of a bridle cheek-piece of Early-Medieval date, Williams Type 2. At one end there is a decorative element of irregular shape. The upper surface of this section has incised decoration, the design of which is now unclear due to wear. The object is broken off on one side of this element. From the other side a sub-rectangular element extends. The reverse of this section is flat, while the upper surface is slightly convex so that it is generally D-shaped in section. This element tapers gently to a slightly flattened spherical terminal. The terminal is slightly thickened o…

Copper alloy harness pendant of Medieval date. The pendant is sub-rectangular and is generally rectangular in section (L. 17.4mm. W. 16.32mm. Th. 1.74mm). At the top there is a suspension loop, now quite worn but intact. The suspension loop is thicker towards the base where it joins the pendant and is set at ninety degrees to the pendant. There is a small circular aperture at the top of the suspension loop. The edges of the pendant are damaged and the corners are now rounded, probably through wear, with one corner being very badly worn. The upper surface has moulded decoration…

Fragment of a copper alloy Ansate brooch. Only one terminal survives and is sub-rectangular with rounded corners (L. 14.25mm. W. 11.5mm. Th. 2.2mm). The upper surface of the terminal is flat and decorated with four incised ring and dot motifs, one in each corner and one in the centre. There are remains on the reverse of the terminal, probably of the pin bar lug, however these are currently still encrusted with earth so that this is not clear. The highly angled arched bow is very short and is tapered from the apex towards the terminals. It is broken off before the junction with the sec…
