Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe fragment, blade end. There are well filed casting lines running down either side. There are no raised ribs on either surface. There is a long groove on the broken end - the end of the socket. Very little of the cutting edge remains. The sides of the cutting edge do not flare - this does not appear to have been re-sharpened very often. Much of the original surface is missing on one side. The original surface has a fine brown patina. This may have been deliberately cut. Viewed from the sides the broken edge is slightly convex (a very shallow v), per…

Butt end of a cast copper alloy palstave axehead. Worn irregular tranverse break across body. Low flanged. Corroded with some traces of bronze disease, although the surface is unpatinated in areas. Miscasting has resulted in an additional strip of metal projecting along one side of the axehead. There is no sign of any attempt to remove this.
