Cast copper alloy scabbard mount with squared off upper section and lower section tapering to a point. Two rivets remain at the top of the mount and two others remain on the left side of the mount as part of a group of four within the decoration. The two rivets on the right side of this group are missing. These rivets would have attached to a hide cover for a wooden scabbard which may have also been lined. The mount is 55 mm long, 35 mm wide and 1.7 mm in thickness. It weighs 16.77 g. A typical Iron Age sword is 35mm in width, so the scabbard would have been wider. This object is d…

Roman contemporary copy of copper alloy as of Claudius (AD 41-54). Minerva Type C reverse. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a contemporary copy of those minted at the Lyon II, à la Petite Tête.

Aluminium copy of a Charles I sixpence, copying the silver shillings minted at Pontefract during 1648 and 1649, the so-called 'siege' pieces. Sixpences were never minted at Pontefract, but were at Scarborough in 1644-5 and Newark in 1646. However, these latter types are square or diamond-shaped in profile, not disc-shaped as in this case. This copy seems to have been stamped and then cut out as a disc, as it has an edge on the reverse that stands slightly proud of the surface of the coin but no edge on the obverse.

It is rare to find a cheekpiece of this date anywhere in the country, they are only about thirty or so known, but it is the first of its kind to have been found in Cornwall.
