Hookplate from a book clasp made from a flat rectangular piece of sheet copper alloy. These clasps were attached to leather straps fixed to the book and helped to hold it shut by hooking into a corresponding catch-piece on the other side. The end of the plate, with a rivet hole to attach the plate to a leather strap, is flared. The one rivet hole still retains its rivet, but there is a tear from the rivet hole to the edge of the flared end. The opposite end is bent over to form a central hook, 8.1 mm wide, beyond a squared off terminal. Half of the upper face of the hookplate is decora…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy unfinished signet finger-ring which was used as a seal as well as a pipe tamper. The bezel would have most likely been engraving with the owner’s initials. The sides of the ring have been engraved with a leaf pattern surrounding the bezel on either side on the upper half of the hoop. The central area between the two sides of the stem of the tamper contain iron corrosion products, suggesting there may have been an steel swivel tool held in place by a pin at its base (see Bailey, DF1, 1992, p.66, No.43). The tool would have had a tamper on one end to push the new toba…

Cast copper alloy clothes hook fastener with sharp-pointed hook. The asymmetrical quatrefoil openwork, consists of two sub-square-shaped loops and two crescent-shaped loops, below a rectangular loop and cross bar, which would have allowed the fastener to have been attached onto the garment. The decoration consists of punched annulets on the upper face of the fastener, around the edge of the openwork, and surrounding a central fleur blossoming out of two leaves or strands of foliage from the boss above the hook. Bailey (2004) illustrates two comparable examples on page 96, Fig.12.17 a…

Cast copper-alloy rim fragment from a cauldron, with internal bevelled edge and carination at the base where it was attached to the body of the cauldron. The original diameter of the cauldron would have been about 420 mm, from the top edge of the rim. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a cauldron of a the same diameter and a depth of 330 mm, which held 8 gallons and 5 pints of liquid, on page 66, No.42, which is dated to c.1660-1699.

Fragment of cast copper-alloy leg from a cauldron, with internal chamfered edge with two carinations, and external mid-rib. The colour of the copper alloy under the corrosion layer is somewhat grey, suggesting that it may have a higher tin content than the usual percentage. The texture is also brittle which may be due to too much tin in the mix. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate cauldron feet of a similar style on page 154-6, Nos.159-161, which are dated to the 17th century.

Cast lead leather workers' palm guard, ovoid in plan and convex in section with a flat base. The rounded upper face has one circular depression in it with a diameter of 14.2 mm. The shape and size suggest that it might have been cast in an oyster shell. The guard would then have been enclosed in a thin leather pouch or wrapped in a cloth which would have had a hole going through it to match the depression in the lead. The lead and leather were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when forcing needles through tough material. Similar palm guards used by sail makers can be seen …

Cast lead leather workers' palm guard, ovoid in plan and convex in section with a flat base. The rounded upper face has one circular boss on it with a diameter of 15 mm, a similar size to that of the common depressions that are found on such guards. The shape and size of the palm guard suggests that it might have been cast in an oyster shell and perhaps the boss was a casting jet or mistake which was normally removed. The palm guard would then have been enclosed in a thin leather pouch or wrapped in a cloth which would have had a hole going through it to match the depression in the le…
