Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy single-looped oval buckle frame with ornate outer edge and a narrowed and offset strap bar. The ornate outer edge is made up of four rows of four evenly spaced moulded notches, perhaps instead of a roller. The strap bar is narrowed and offset and the pin is missing, but there is wear where it would have been attached. The frame is 23.5 mm long, 18 mm wide and 2 mm in thickness. The strap bar is 8 mm long and 2 mm wide and 1.7 mm in thickness. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on p.22, No.92, which he dates to c.1250-1400. Read (1988) illustrates a…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman wing-and-discbow or Aesica-variant type (see notes below) brooch, but a variant, with elements of T-shape brooches, namely the long wings. The brooch is corroded and pitted and the decorative moulding unclear apart from on the top of the head where, between the end of the bow and the beginning of the projection in to the wings either side, remains a raised curve, edged with an incised line, like two eye-brows. The bow has been flattened into a disc shape, but it is too corroded for any surface decoration to remain. There are four incised rings aro…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged T-shaped or Colchester derivative tapering bow brooch. The pin of the brooch is missing and so is the catchplate. The ends of both the wings and the lower part of the bow have broken off. The wings are tubular and where the wings are broken the iron axis which would have secured the missing hinged pin is exposed. The bow is D-shaped in section and tapers towards the missing foot. It has a moulded knurled crest extending from the head and tapering towards the lower bow. This crest is defined by raised moulding in the form of rectangular bosse…

Object type: FERRULE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete sheet copper alloy cylinder or ferrule with rivet hole. The cylinder is broken at both ends and has folded in on itself so that it is difficult to see whether it is tapering towards the end without the hole. The rivet hole has probably not been used as there is no distortion to its circular shape and no corrosion around the hole from an iron or copper alloy rivet. Ottaway and Rogers (2002) illustrate a similar example from Bedern on page 2854, Fig.1431, No.14277, which is dated to the 13th century. Margeson (1993) illustrates an example with two rivet holes on page 78, …

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a receptacle, but with little curvature on the internal edge, suggesting that it was not a circular pot, but possibly ovoid or sub-rectangular. It seems to have little depth and may have been used as the rim of a wooden vessel, to strengthen it, as it has a rivet hole, half of which is missing, at one edge. Geoff Egan comments that it is pretty robust and probably 18th century in date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy toilet article, possibly a nail cleaner or pick. It has an incomplete suspension loop or hook and a broken shaft. The suspension hook has been flattened and broadened out and the shaft is circular in section. The broken hook is 14 mm long, 10 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick. The hook and shaft piece is 50 mm long and 4 mm in diameter and the other section of shaft is 72 mm long and 4 mm in diameter. Both pieces weigh 10.91g together. Crummy illustrates an example of similar length on page 62, Fig.66, No.1940, which is dated to c.AD 75-125, and another example of similar …

Gilt, cast copper alloy hollow-ended strapend or belt mount for a scabbard. This has zoomorphic terminal in the form of a beast's head. The beast's head has perforated nostrils and engraved eyes, snout, and hair, beyond moulded brows and parted by a central ridge of spikes. Behind the head, in the centre of the strapend, is a diamond shaped plate, splitting the hair of the beast in two so that is draped either side of the diamond. Incised on the upper surface of the cube is the letter 'S', which could stand for 'souveniez moi' or 'sancta'. Beyond the cube is a rectangular section whic…
