Medieval Gilt copper alloy strap distributor, very corroded, openwork square central section (13 x 13mm) with square boss at each corner, from each of which projects, saltire-wise, a slightly hollow-backed oval lobe (30 x 31mm). The four missing strap-attachments and straps would have been looped around each bar between bosses. A similar example (perhaps incomplete, with central square only) was found at Middle Harling, cf. EAA 74, Fig.51 no.129, misidentified as a pendant.

Gilt, cast copper alloy hollow-ended strapend or belt mount for a scabbard. This has zoomorphic terminal in the form of a beast's head. The beast's head has perforated nostrils and engraved eyes, snout, and hair, beyond moulded brows and parted by a central ridge of spikes. Behind the head, in the centre of the strapend, is a diamond shaped plate, splitting the hair of the beast in two so that is draped either side of the diamond. Incised on the upper surface of the cube is the letter 'S', which could stand for 'souveniez moi' or 'sancta'. Beyond the cub…

Double sheet copper-alloy strap end with bent sides in the form of a shield in plan with a lobed knop extension at the terminal end. The face plate is incised with the letters IHS ("Iesus Hominum Salvator") with a line above that follows the form of the knopped end. All this is within an incised border which follows the edge of the plate and is emphasised by six diagonal marks on either side if the lettering. The back plate has keyhole-shaped openwork surrounded by four rivets in four rivet holes in each corner. Read (1995) illustrates a similar example with the same initials…

A copper alloy bar mount/fitting (probably Medieval). The mount is flat on the reverse. There is a raised central circular dome (reverse is hollow) that is decorated with incised crosshatched lines. On either side of the dome are two triangular arms with large triangular perforations. The longer edges of these are decorated with three bands of pairs of parallel incised lines. The shorter edges are constricted, possibly through wear. Dark green matt patina. The object is similar to sidelinks on a horse's bridle (Biddle 1990:1043) but these tend to have circular attachment projections f…

Copper-alloy medieval barred mount (c. 14th century). The mount is in two parts, linked by a separate rivet. One piece is formed from a cut piece of copper-alloy, shaped like a figure 8, with the bottom of the lower section missing. Over this bottom part the second mount is riveted. This mount is hemispherical in section and is sub-rectangular, running across the mount, horizontally. The rivet runs through the centre of this mount, joining it to the other. The top of the lower mount is pierced with a rivet hole - the rivet is missing. The bottom mount measures 14 mm in length and…

A copper alloy hooked, or looped fitting of 'socketed hook' type. The loop is made up of two bars, the front one of which bears incised decoration. Above the loop, the bars are joined by a 'D' shaped ring which forms an open socket measuring 8 by 12.5mm. There is a flat plate on at the junction of the front bar and the socket. This bears a worn, incised cross motif defined by a double outline. The incised lines appear to contain traces of a whitish substance which may be remains of white metal inlay. Two similar fittings from Linconshire (LIN-F29FC4) were found attached to a disc-shap…

Early 11th Century Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy, cast, tubular, open-work, 'socketed hook' (Length 44mm). Once with a hook terminal that connected it into a disc shaped element with at least two other similar fittings forming a three way strap junction. Very worn surface but the faint remnant of a possible concentric square moulded decoration on the 'head' and with a scalloped upper surface. The central section is slightly curved as a result of being crudely cast or possibly distorted under strain during use. The curved tip of the hook broken away in antiquity.

Copper alloy hooked object of Early Medieval date comprising a main plate with an open socket on the reverse with an incomplete hook beneath. The plate expands at one end to form a generally semi-circular terminal (L. 12mm. W. 16.4mm. Th. 4.3mm). The reverse is slightly concave and the upper surface convex. The upper surface has moulded decoration, now heavily worn, in the form of a circular element in the centre of the lower edge with three broad raised elements, divided by recessed areas, radiating out to the edge. Beneath this the object narrows and becomes thinner and generally re…

A V- or U-shaped copper-alloy strap-end terminating in a (damaged) hook at the point of the 'V'. The worn front of the fitting has an engraved Ringerike-style design around the curve of the U, with an animal head occupying each arm. The animals are identical, with with a double-grooved collar at the neck, elliptical eyes and a wide gaping mouth clasping each arm of the object. The upper terminals of the two arms are shaped like fleurs-de-lis and are each also embellished with Ringerike-style engraving. The square heads of two separate copper-alloy rivets, one in each terminal, show cl…

A cast copper-alloy ‘sword-belt fitting’. The object consists of a plate, perforated by two longitudinally arranged rivet holes at the attachment end, which terminates in a hook on the reverse. The artefact is ovoid in shape and slightly convex in profile. The rivet heads are present on the obverse and made from iron, as evidenced by the corrosion product surrounding the perforations. It has been suggested that such objects were used in the early post-medieval period to attach scabbards to baldricks (Geake 2001, 36; Read 2001, 30). A parallel for this artefact can be found in Read…

A hooked belt attachment. The belt was clearly intended to pass through the large rectangular aperture (21mm long), the rounded loop facing downwards. On the outer face (right in the photo) is linear decoration in the form of a diaper pattern, each line formed of three strands, each inlaid with niello. Compare with Poore et al. Copper alloy S-shaped belt hook fastener of Post-Medieval date. Each end of the fastener terminates in a moulded snake's head with the decoration extended to all faces. The brow, eyes and mouth is well defined on each head, and there is a suggestion of scales, although these are now badly worn. The object then narrows from each head before expanding again at the centre of the body of the snake.
