Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy fragment, probably part of a medieval circular badge. This artefact, however, derives from an obviously religious context. The fragment, which constitutes approximately one third of the complete roundel, features an external border on the obverse face. Within this is an incised border line, and, on the top half, further border elements which include a dashed line formed by regular diagonal breaks, and two further incised border lines beyond this. The lower half lacks an additional border since figures are superimposed in impression where it would have been. In the lower …

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn cast copper-alloy late medieval pilgrim badge. The badge has a semi-circular base with three protruding elements. This shape for the base is reminiscent of badges which depict the Virgin and Child in the horns of a crescent moon (c.f. Spencer 1998, 150; refs. 155, 156, 159a), although it is not considered that this artefact is such a depiction. Rather, this badge is most likely a Pietà: a representation of the Virgin Mary mourning over the dead body of Jesus. Specifically, it depicts a central figure, Mary, draped in a hooded garment. The crucified Christ lies diagonally …

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The tip from a broken Bronze Age spear. The spear tip is made from cast copper-alloy. It measures 55 mm long and tapers from 22.5 mm to 3.5 mm at the point. The spear is socketed with a circular hole running through it. The spear has a rounded ridge running down the length of the spear, on both the top and bottom, making it circular in profile, with a triangular wing (formed by the edge of the spear) to either side. The spear dates to the late Bronze Age, from around 1200 to 800 BC. Similar artefacts are illustrated in Langmaid (1976, page 53; figure 19).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a small cast copper-alloy spearhead or arrowhead, likely to date from the late Bronze Age, from circa 1200 to 800 BC. The weapon is socketed (existing socket size 7.3 mm in diameter). The object is unfortunately broken at both the socketed end and the blade end. The result of the socket causes a convex ridge to run down the obverse and the reverse of the blade. In profile the object is therefore oval with a wing at either side. The edges of the blade begin to taper towards the break at the socketed end of the object, whilst the ridge caused by the socket continues to ex…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead tip with evidence of a long slender leaf-shaped blade (length: 41.8mm; width: 15.6mm; thickness: 7.7mm; weight: 8.9g), dating to the Bronze Age between c.2200 and c.900 BC. It is triangular in plan. There is a highly pronounced median rib, which would have continued down the body of the spearhead, forming a central lozenge-sectioned profile with the wings to either side. The end of the tip is very narrow but has been blunted. The overall condition of the artefact is worn, corroded, and in a poor condition. Very little of the original p…

An annular brooch made of copper alloy. The brooch is circular, with an internal diameter of 22.0mm. The frame is thin and flat in cross-section. There is a very narrow constriction (2mm wide) in the frame, around which the pin would have been looped; the pin is now missing. It appears that the pin might have been rent from the frame as the frame is bent out of alignment on one side of this junction. Such damage, however, could equally have been caused by the plough.
The internal and external edges have been given border grooves on both front and reverse. On the front, between these g…

A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester-derivative, Harlow (double lug) type Roman brooch. This example is missing its pin, its spring mechanism and part of the bow (and therefore catchplate) following old damage. Further, in the past the bow was bent out of its former perpendicular relationship to the wings. The brooch has a double perforated lug at the its head. The uppermost hole of the lug contains the remnant of the spring chord. The intact wings are located at the rear of the head and are convex. The bow emerges from the head on the reverse at the top, above the w…

A cast copper-alloy foot fragment, incomplete due to old breaks, now worn. This handle is most likely derived from a large skillet. A fragment of the body of the vessel also survives. The handle is 84mm in surviving length and 38mm in width at the body end and it tapers gently towards its missing terminal, measuring 18.7mm in width at this incomplete terminal. It ranges from 26.5mm in thickness at the attachment end to 8.2mm at its present terminal. The handle is sub-triangular in section, with a central flange on the lower face. The top face of the handle appears to be undecorated. T…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman T-shape brooch of the ‘Sawfish’ type of Hull T145Bi with serrated edges, headsud and no crest. A ‘mature’ example in that the flat bow is serrated along its whole length, in this case with seven pairs of teeth. The bow tapers a little towards the foot where it terminates in a prominent forward-facing knob. On the reverse from the foot-knob is an abraded, incomplete catchplate which extends 12.5mm up the bow. At the head the wings are the terminal elements; they are plano-convex in profile with the flat side angled back towards the bow. The…

A medieval shield-shaped harness pendant cast in copper-alloy dating to the 13th or 14th centuries. The pendant curves outwards in profile. On its obverse face are the royal arms of England, presumably blazoned 'gules, three lions passant guardant in pale or.' That is, a red enamel field with three gilt lions walking along with the dexter fore-paw raised with their faces looking outwards (the colours are supposed - see notes, below). As with an example illustrated in Ashley (2002, 13; ref. 103), the arms have been differenced with a label: a horizontal band from which depend (hang dow…

Copper-alloy medieval barred mount (c. 14th century). The mount is in two parts, linked by a separate rivet. One piece is formed from a cut piece of copper-alloy, shaped like a figure 8, with the bottom of the lower section missing. Over this bottom part the second mount is riveted. This mount is hemispherical in section and is sub-rectangular, running across the mount, horizontally. The rivet runs through the centre of this mount, joining it to the other. The top of the lower mount is pierced with a rivet hole - the rivet is missing.
The bottom mount measures 14 mm in length and…

A copper-alloy artefact, probably an incomplete medieval harness pendant suspension mount. The mount is rectangular and has rounded corners; the hinge protrudes from one of the edges near the corner. The hinge element appears to have been cast integrally and bent round to the reverse. Remains of an iron axis bar are extant within the hinge. The mount features a pair of rivet holes: one central across the width nearly opposite the hinge slot; the other also central, adjacent to the shorter edge at the opposite end. The artefact is worn and slightly corroded. The corner directly opposit…

Roman sestertius of Crispina, wife of Commodus, dating to c. AD 178-88 (Reece Period 9), SALVS S C, Salus seated left, feeding snake at altar. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 442, no. 672. BMC IV (p. cliv) suggests that this issue with the obverse legend CRISPINA AVG IMP COMMODI AVG could have been struck early, in Marcus Aurelius' reign, c. AD 178-80. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not exiled to Capri until AD 188. Therefore, we date her coins to c. AD 178-188; although some coins, such as this one. pr…

Below it is the thickest section of the artefact (at 2.4mm) which is decorated on both faces with a pair of incised transverse lines at each end. A copper-alloy Roman leaf-shaped nail cleaner with varying decoration The nail cleaner is particularly interesting in that it is shaped like a fish, with the fish's tail forming the points of the cleaner. The cleaner broadens from the tail, as a stylised, symmetrical fish's body. The tip of the fish's head is broken and missing (from the wear this appears to have been an ancient break) and this is presumably where a loop would have been located to attach the nail cleaner to a belt or chatelaine. The obverse is decorated with a wavy 'S' shaped pattern around the outside and down the ce…
