Probable copper alloy lid from an Anglo-Saxon workbox. The lid is circular thin sheet of copper alloy with a central hole, containing a suspension loop. The loop consists of a single oval strip of copper alloy looped over at the top, threaded through the hole and then splayed on the reverse to secure it to the lid. Attached to the suspension loop is another small strip of copper alloy looped through the suspension loop, perhaps forming the first link in a chain. There is a further hole to either side of the central hole although it is not certain whether these are areas of damage. …

Incomplete copper alloy whistle of Post Medieval date, probably eighteenth century (AD 1700 – AD 1800). Length 67mmm, maximum diameter 16.5mm. Weight 10.05g. The whistle has been designed to resemble a cannon. The closed end of the whistle is cast and is composed of a base ring, a cascabel and a button. The button is elongated and has a transverse perforation which is 2.2mm in diameter. This perforation allowed the whistle to be suspended. Viewing the cascabel from the button end, it is decorated with a circle of repetitive tendril motifs. The base ring has beaded decoration around …

Fragment of a copper alloy whistle of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1800). Length 49mm, diameter 5mm. Weight 3.92g. The weight includes some soil. The fragment is part of a decorated “hawking whistle”. It has been made from a single piece of sheet copper alloy which has been folded and joined by solder to form a hollow tube which is sub-circular in cross-section. The sheet has been thoughtfully cut so that the continuity of the decoration is not interrupted by the soldered seam which is clearly visible on the underside. The surface is decorated with three equally spaced longi…

Cast copper alloy trade weight of probable eighteenth or nineteenth century date (AD 1700 – AD 1900). Diameter 23mm, 5mm thick. Weight 13.01g. (0.459 oz). The weight is circular in plan and the edges slope gently outwards and upwards from the base. The upper face is recessed and has a six-pointed star motif which is slightly off-centre. The arms of the star are wedge-shaped. There is an ewer at 6 o’ clock. The weight has possibly been “over-stamped” with initials “CS” divided by two conjoined circles. A circular copper-alloy trade weight of saucer form, 25mm in diameter, with a greatest thickness of 4mm, the marginal rim being 2.5mm broad. The weight is 13.22g, that is 0.466oz, showing that it is intended for a half-ounce weight. The upper surface bears three struck assays or authorization marks. The sign of the ewer is shown at 6 o'clock: one shaped coarsely like a letter L (perhaps for London)is at 12 o'clock, and the third is clearly a Crown above the capital letter G. On this trade weight that apparently stands for one of the four King Georges 1714-1826 (before the 1826 Imperial…
