A copper alloy token from the late 1660s. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. This one may have been issued by merchant in Otley (though the inscription is a little uncertain), whose name probably begins John Pu... There is a grocer from Otley named John Pullen who jointly issued tokens with Christopher Ward. This could be one he issued alone. The arms may also support this as the grocers' arms have a chevron with 3 triple devices.

A copper alloy mid 17th century halfpenny token, issued by Richard Stockdale of Hull in 1665. His profession is not clear from the token but Thompson and Dickinson suggest he was a mariner. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the mid 17th century, particularly in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. Charles II began minting an official copper coinage in 1672 to address this.

A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. A copper alloy rose/orb jeton from Nuremberg. From the inscription LA[...]R it is likely that it was issued by one of the Laufer family, a series of masters over 6 generations from 1554-1732. This one probably dates to 1550-1650. However the inscription is unclear, so it may just be that it is nonsense, making this one of the earlier anonymous issues and dating 1500-1550.

(1) A cast lead token bearing an impersonal stock design of a six-foil, probably dating to the 18th century AD (diameter: 22.1mm; thickness: 1.9mm; weight: 6.21g). The reverse has evidence of a rim but is devoid of decoration, which suggests it may be eighteenth century as the designs persisted, and the later derivatives bore a design on the face only. The token is in a worn but fair condition. A similar 17th century design is illustrated in Mitchiner & Skinner's 'English Tokens, c. 1425 to 1672' within The British Numismatic Journal Volume 54, 1984, page 163 & plate 22, ref no 47.

A cast lead token bearing a similar design to an impersonal stock design of a cross in a circle with a pellet in each quarter (diameter: 21.1mm; thickness: 2.7mm; weight: 6.06g). The reverse has evidence of a rim, as well as deliberate marking in the form of scratches. There is no original decoration on the reverse, suggesting a possible dating to the 18th century AD, as these designs persisted. However, these later derivatives bear a design on the face only, which is evident on this artefact. The token is worn but in a fair condition. A similar 17th century design is illustrated…

A cast lead token bearing a pictorial-geometric design, with evidence of a line across the diameter on the reverse (diameter: 21.9mm; thickness: 2.1mm; weight: 5.51g). This token possibly dates to the Early Tudor period (late 15th-16th century AD), and is similar to examples illustrated in Mitchiner & Skinner's 'English Tokens c. 1425-1672' within The British Numismatic Journal Volume 54, 1984, page 151 & plate 10, ref no 98-9. This token is worn but in a fair condition.

A slightly incomplete struck/ hammered copper alloy English trade halfpenny token, dating to AD 1670 (diameter: 20.8mm; thickness: 0.4mm; weight: 0.80g). The inscription is worn but probably represents someone called John and his occupation of being a butcher, but the token is too worn to identify where, although he could have been based in London. Overall, the coin is in a worn and poor condition.

A complete cast lead token, probably dating to the 16th/ 17th century (diameter: 24.1mm; thickness: 1.9mm; weight: 6.06g). The token is only decorated on one side with criss-crossed linear design, as well as other marks in between which are quite worn. There is also a slight rim around the outside edge of the token. This artefact is similar to a token illustrated by Mitchiner, 1984, page 122 & 156, plate 15, ref no 15, dating between AD 1570-90 and described as a provincial tokens of the Elizabethan period.
