Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy cast spherical bell, of the kind known as crotal or rumbler bells. The bell is spherical with a raised equator. At one pole is a projecting subrectangular attachment mount(the length 40mm is the sphere plus the mount), with a very worn hole where the bell was attached. This hemisphere of the bell has 2 subcircular perforations (6-8mm diameter) either side of the attachment mount. Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A gilt copper alloy strap fitting. The main part of the fitting is penannular, with prominent knops at the terminals, and split in 2 to fit onto a strap. Within the area enclosed ia a moulded scallop shell, one face visible on either side. Opposite the mouth of the ring is a tubular loop, probably for suspension. The whole item was origianlly gilded, with traces remaining particularly on the shells. Both faces of the fitting are the same. It probably worked to suspend something from a strap or belt, possibly as part of a set, such as sword belt fittings.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy buckle. The frame is symmetrical double looped, each loop D-shaped. The loops are thick at the pin bar and pin rests, and thinner at the 'corners'. The pin bar is iron, with a copper alloy pin and buckle plate. The buckle plate is formed from a sheet, notched for the pin and folded round the pin bar. It narrows gently away from the pin bar into an elongated triangular shape. The apex of the triangle, including the means of attaching the buckle to a strap (probably a rivet hole or upstanding stud) is missing. The whole frame is curved, probably to fit a boot for use …

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably a cast copper alloy trade weight. The weight is a flat disc, stamped on one side with 4 swords, the numeral 8 over the letter S (alternatively the numeral 3 under the letter S?) and the number 20. On the other side there is a stamped V or A at one edge. The sword stamp (the sword of St Paul) is common on 17th/18th century trade weights as the mark of the City of London Guildhall. However there is usually only one, in conjuction with the ewer mark of the Founders Company, a royal cipher and the letter (for Averdepois, the measurement system). It seems probable though that thi…
