Face A of WAW-148C02 preserves evidence of 5 previous flake removals, the flake scars. These removals are generally indicative of centripedal flaking patterns, with the core rotating through the hands of the knapper. The scars of these flakes show broadly similar magnitude of damage e.g. abrasion of ridges between flake scars. This face of WAW-148C02 shows extensive ‘battering’ damage, in the form of a great number of incipient cones of percussion – the small marks that develop on flint as it impacts with other lithic materials, such as those shown within the dotted rectangl…

A small waste flint flake, weighing 9.9g. The flake has a striking platform and a bulb of percussion and there is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. There is a large fault line in the flint just under the bulb of percussion.

A small waste flint flake, weighing 18.8g. The flake has a bulb of percussion, but this feature has largely been removed by knapping resulting in the piece having a rounded end. There is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. The flake has been broken horizontally. Approximatley 10% of the original cortex surface survives on the dorsal surface of the flint.

There is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. Approximately 40% of the dorsal surface still has the original cortex surface surviving.

Large Achuleian handaxe. It is a heavy butted, sub-cordate shape with a slight reversed S twist in profile. It is made from greensand chert. It has a heavy, creamy patina and some slight iron staining. There is no cortex visible. It is a well formed piece with shallow, invasive scars on both faces and a finely worked tip. There is (ancient) heavy wear on both faces and the flake ridges have been abraded to 1-2mm in width. The edges have been crushed in antiquity. There is no modern damage.

A snapped large flint biface with relatively slight blue/grey patination. It has a surviving flake scar from an earlier implement with a thick pale grey patina. The snap is also lightly patinated but has some recent unpatinated edge damage. The implement type is unclear but may be from a dagger hilt or a large shouldered point, it is likely to date from the Upper Palaeolithic to the early Bronze Age.

A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date. Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.

Tip shows signs of ancient damage. General condition lightly rolled. Dimensions 65 x 55 x 17mm. Probably Middle Paleolithic (100000 to 40000BP).

Lower Paleolithic Flint handaxe (dimensions 117 x 78 x 32mm) Cordate handaxe, with almost plano-convex section, in black flint (as shown by minor recent damage) with strongly contrasting patinations on the two faces - the convex face is patinated and stained brown, the almost flat face has a marked cream and pale grey patina ("toad belly"). Both faces are finished by shallow invasive flaking (soft hammer), with the planar face also having almost continuous finer edge retouch, in places giving a step-flaked edge. Lower Palaeolithic (700,000 - 180,000 years before present).

Probably a Clactonian flint tool, made from creamy-grey flint. Part of the cortex survives near the edge. It is a tool made from the core; marks of secondary and tertiary flaking clearly visible along the cutting edge. From the same field come a further five pieces of flint (flakes) and two pieces of ochre. The Clactonian industry involved striking thick, irregular flakes from a core of flint, which was then employed as a chopper. The flakes would have been used as crude knives or scrapers. The Clactonian Culture is named after a superb collection of Prehistoric material found on a sit…
