Incomplete and rather peculiar copper alloy strap-end. It is 57mm in length and max 31mm wide. The central part of the strap-end is widest and circular. It has the remains of 3 upstanding rivets, which have been inserted through the backplate. Apparantly a rectangular piece crossed the strap end here, over the rivets, joining with the rectangular end projecting from the circular area (measures 21x20mm) and the other projection from the circular area, an animal head. Two long 'ears' project backwards to join the remains of the 18mm wide strip. Either side of this strip are two semi-cir…

A 9th century copper-alloy tongue-shaped strap-end of Thomas Type A (2003). The wider open end has a decorative indentation at the centre of its top edge and two small circular attachment holes. Immediately beneath these holes is an incised scallop-shaped decorative panel with a single incised wedge within its confines. The main decorative panel lies below and is contained within a sub-rectangular incised border. It probably depicts a dog and is executed in the Trewhiddle style (see D.M.Wilson, 1964, p.181). The animal faces left, its stylised head extending to the upper left hand cor…

Medieval composite hooked strap-end. Front plate comprises tongue-shaped sheet with notched trefoil perforation between two notches at attachment end, narrowed terminal recessed and curled-round onto reverse to form broad hook. Two rivets at attachment end and single rivet with integral loop projecting forward from face secure shortened back-plate to reverse, leaving 3mm gap at upper end for belt or strap. 18 x 30mm. Cf. Ottaway and Rogers (2002), fig.1474, no.15197 and Hare (1985) Battle Abbey, fig.51, nos.70-1. 14th century.

Early Medieval strap end, incomplete. There are two rivet holes (the rivets are missing) in the damaged proximal end, which is split to take the strap. The central panel of the strap end is decorated with numerous simple punched half moon motifs. The distal terminal is broken off, but was probably decorated with a debased animal head. An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman artefact, probably a strap-end, possibly a pendant of the military type. The perforations, a pair of kidney-shaped holes in the upper part of the object and a further broken perforation above, suggest that this is an amphora-shaped strap-end, as such dating to the fourth or fifth century AD (Geake 2001, 31). By definition, the artefact takes the broad shape of an amphora, tapering to a two-part terminal knop 5mm in width. The body to the right of the right-hand kidney-shaped perforation (when looking at the front view of the object) has been bro…

A medieval strap-end of composite construction dating to 14th century, possibly incomplete. The object is sub-circular in form and its front features a central spade-shaped grooved aperture which is flanked on either side by a hole and extant rivet. Although only the front view has been recorded (see notes, below), the recorder states that the front and back plate both survive either side of a forked spacer and attached by the rivets. There appears to be a slight split extending into the body of the visible front plate from the aperture. One might also conjecture that the spacer ha…

A copper-alloy strap-end of probable 14th or 15th century AD date (Egan and Pritchard, p. 129). The object is simple in form, consisting of a sheet of metal folded widthways. This sheet tapers in width, from 12.4mm wide at the proximal end of the upper plate, to 7.7mm wide at the same end of the lower plate. The two halves would originally have been held together by a rivet, the two holes for which remain. The upper plate has two opposing notches cut near to the bottom of the vertical sides, two vertical incisions extending upwards from the bottom edge, and a series of horizontal incis…
