Fragment of a pottery roof ridge tile with grooved decoration in a 'herring bone' pattern or 'fir tree' motif on either side of the crest and running from the top of the ridge towards the base of the tile, which is missing. The fabric includes small white inclusions of feldspar and slivers of gray shale and fragments of mica, which suggest that it is made of Lostwithiel-type ware. This type of tile has been found at sites like Tintagel where it can be dated to a certain building stage in the castle's history during the 13th century (Tintagel catalogue No.1 - Box 23 - unpublish…

A cast copper-alloy dagger scabbard chape dating to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. The image provided (see notes, below) depicts the front-piece (traditionally a relatively thick cast element), but does not show the thinner backplate which would have been attached using solder. It is therefore uncertain that this backplate survives. This is a 'common style' of dagger chape (Bailey 1995, 70), which curves round - apparently to the right, from the front view offered - following the shape of the blade. At that end it tapers, terminating in a knop. There is a large, centr…

An incomplete hand made iron arrowhead dating to the medieval period. The arrow is socketed, with a long socket of c. 45mm, and has a barbed head with a noticeable medial longitudinal spine. In profile it takes the shape of a circle with triangular protrusions on either side. Jessop (1997, 3) notes that this is a 'relatively simple design', the central spine providing 'improved lateral strength and aerodynamic properties'. The tips of the barbs have suffered abrasions, as has the terminal of the socket. This form is that described by Roger Ascham in 1545 as the 'broad head' or 'swal…
