County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy fragment of the mouth of a socketed axe, with rib, about 10 mm in depth, running around the circumference of the socket, from the edge of the haft end of socket along the body of the axe. The socket is almost square in section, or would be if it was complete. Local parallels include a straight-sided, square-sectioned socketed axe (RIC 1863.8) from Newlyn, St. Peter in Paul parish (Pearce, 1983, p.421, No.115, Plate 14, Fig.115), and a Tréhout type of Armorican axe (RIC 1919.9.7) from Higher Penquite, St. Breward (Pearce, 1983, p.425, No.134, Plate 17, Fig.134). …

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment of a Middle Bronze Age axe, with flanged edges but no evidence of a stop-ridge. The axe is missing its blade and is corroded and starting to break up into layers, so that very little of the original detail remains. One of the flange tops seems to have folded in towards the face of the axe, but it is hard to make out whether this is through corrosion. The butt end is narrow, in 17.7 mm width and 13.9 mm in thickness, and the axe does not widen out much below the flanges, where it is 26 mm wide and 6.2 mm thick. In its present state, it resembles part of a ‘s…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy sword fragment with rounded point end and broken upper blade with the rest of the blade and hilt missing. The sides of the blade come to a point and there is a central ridge running up and down the blade, resembling the Ewart Park type sword shape in plan, which widens towards the bottom half of the blade. The fragment is lozenge-shaped in section, without a pronounced central ridge, which is typical of this type of sword section. The sword fragment is 47 mm long, 38 mm wide, 1.8 mm thick at the rounded end and 7.5 mm thick at the broken blade end, and 52.84…

Flint serrated blade, narrow and lozenge-shaped in plan, triangular in section, and slightly convex and arched in profile, with sub-parallel lateral margins, bimarginal worked edges, and rounded distal and proximal ends. Some cortex remains at the tip of the distal end on the dorsal face and from the proximal end, running along the dorsal ridge for about 20 mm, which suggests that the implement has been made from a secondary flake. There are also a number of scratch marks on the ventral face of the distal end, running from the right edge inwards, and more scratch marks running from the…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint flake that is almost rectangular in plan, with sub-parallel lateral margins, and lozenge-shaped in section, with two parallel dorsal ridges. The flake seems to have snapped along a natural facet at the distal end of the flint, creating a right angle to the right edge of the blade. The right edge and the distal end seem to have been prepared for more reworking, but not reworked as such (Alison Roberts, Ashmolean Museum, pers comm). The distal end is plano-convex in profile suggesting that the flake may have used as some sort of planing tool, and there is evidence of usewear in the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint serrated blade that is sub-rectangular in plan, with sub-parallel lateral margins, and triangular in section, with a central dorsal ridge. The original flake was struck off a large blade core with two platforms. No cortex remains suggesting that this is a tertiary flake. The blade seems to have been prepared but not reworked as such (Alison Roberts, Ashmolean Museum, pers comm). The ventral face has some scarring above the proximal end, possibly caused by frost fracture, running from the centre of the blade to the left edge. There are two notches just above the bulb of percussion…

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint double-sided thumbnail scraper that is shaped like a keyhole in plan and is convex in profile, with the bulb of percussion half way along the right side of the scraper on the ventral face. The scraper has been unimarginally retouched on the both the right and left edges of the dorsal face, after having been cut away or waisted on both edges below the reworked edge. But this implement was not waisted for hafting. The concave indentation, created by the inside of the bulb of percussion, allows the thumb to rest there and push the scraper either way. The flint is dark grey-bro…

Flint thumbnail scraper, semi-circular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The distal end and lateral margins have been unimarginally retouched on the dorsal face. The proximal end has been snapped off on the left side of the dorsal face, and on the right side of the ventral face where the bulb of percussion is. This broken edge may have extended to a point originally to mimic the point on the other side of the proximal end. The flint is a mottled grey colour, probably made from a local beach pebble, and the length to breadth ratio is almost 1:1. Bond illustrates …

Flint short end and side scraper, ovate in plan, flat and sub-rectangular in profile and triangular in section. The distal end and right edge of the dorsal face are unimarginally reworked. There is also a notch a third of the way along from the distal end on the left edge of the ventral side, but this may have been produced by more recent damage. The flint is a mottled light grey colour, with iron-staining on the surface of both faces, and probably was knapped from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is 3:2. Cast copper alloy fragment of an ingot, triangular in plan, and in profile, a smoother convex surface leading down to a rougher edge or base, which comes off at about a 30° angle. This profile suggest that it may come from a plano-convex ingot, similar to those found in the Late Bronze Age across the county.

Flint short end and side scraper, triangular in plan, flat and trapezoidal in profile and triangular in section. The distal end and right edge of the dorsal face are unimarginally reworked. Some of the cortex remains on the left edge of the dorsal face. The flint is slightly translucent and dark brown-grey in colour. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates similar examples of end scrapers on page 56, Fig.5.22, No.L5; page 151, Fig.5.135, No.F112; and page 154, Fig.5.138, No.19, which are dated to the Early Bronze Age.

Gold fragment of a strip raised into a lip on both of the edges of each face. The flanged end is flattened and has been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the end to expand. The other end of the fragment is broken and worn. Treasure report written by Gillian Varndell: Roughly trapezoidal fragment of gold; the broader end is flattened and cut (or flattened and broken off) and there is a rough break at the opposite, narrower end. The long edges have slight flanges, more marked on one face; the 'flange' at the narrow edge is probably a result of breaking.

Cast copper alloy incomplete flat axe with the beginnings of a stop ridge and flanged sides dating to the Early Bronze Age c.2000-1700 BC. The blade end of the axe is corroded but the angle suggests that it may have had a crescentic blade. Both faces of the axe are decorated with straight lines punched into the axe after casting, about 5mm in length, and about 1mm apart, in what is referred to as a 'rain pattern'. The axe is 113mm long, 52mm wide at the blade end, 23mm wide at the butt end, 10mm in thickness and weighs 186.03g. Comparable examples of decorated flat axes fro…

Cast copper alloy flat axe fragment with rounded butt end and broken blade where the rest of the blade is missing below the stop, if there was one. The butt or haft end is worn into a substantial curve, which makes it look like examples of flat axes from the Mile-Cross - Aylesford phase (c.2000-1900 BC), such as one illustrated in Needham (1998) on page 124, Fig.25, No.48. But the shape of the curve may be deceiving as it is uneven and could be worn at the edges from a butt end that was more squared off originally, and therefore from the earlier Brithdir - Butterwick phase (c.2150-2000…

Cast copper alloy socketed ferrule of a triangular basal-looped spearhead with the remains of the base of the loops on either side of the broken ferrule. Beyond these protrusions there are on either side about 10 mm of the base of the blade in the form of a slight ridge. The blades would have been leaf-shaped and bevelled. The ferrule has a long hollow socket which is circular in section and tapers towards the broken blade end. The opposite end of the socket is also damaged but the surface of the ferrule is in good condition, having a rich green shiny patina. Similar examples can be fo…

Cast copper alloy scabbard mount with squared off upper section and lower section tapering to a point. Two rivets remain at the top of the mount and two others remain on the left side of the mount as part of a group of four within the decoration. The two rivets on the right side of this group are missing. These rivets would have attached to a hide cover for a wooden scabbard which may have also been lined. The mount is 55 mm long, 35 mm wide and 1.7 mm in thickness. It weighs 16.77 g. A typical Iron Age sword is 35mm in width, so the scabbard would have been wider. This object is d…
