Copper alloy Roman zoomorphic brooch in the form of a seated greyhound. The overall form of the brooch is reminiscent of a Romano-British Dragonesque booch. The brooch is in good condition and remains intact apart from the pin on the reverse. The brooch is finely cast and the surface has been tinned to give a silver finish. The tinning covers the whole front surface and extends onto the rim of the hollow cast back. The form of the dog is well-observed and slightly stylised with an enlarged single eye on the head and a curved body resting on muscular haunches. The legs are long and sle…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy penannular brooch, probably of Early Medieval date. Less than half of the brooch survives and the pin is missing. The cross section of the arm is oval and measures 5.41mm by 4.53mm. At the broken end it is slightly thinner and somewhat worn, presumably by the pin. The polyhedral terminal measures 11.5mm by 9.69mm by 6.99mm and has traces of enamelled decoration on the upper surface. The enamel is set within a lozenge and within this there are four small triangles in the angles and a central rectangle of copper alloy. The colour of the enamel has faded …

Incomplete copper alloy two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin style) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are incomplete, only the left hand wing survives. However it is likely that they were both semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring, and pin are not present. It is likely that the spring was attached by an external chord to a rearward facing hook. This hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge but is incomplete due to abrasion in the ploughsoil. There is a large sub-oval concave depression in…

However, the object appears to be complete and, as such, can be identified as a brooch of probable medieval date. A direct parallel has not been found for such a brooch (perhaps the most similar example can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 110; ref. 817)): lozengiform, with three knobbed corners and a wider ele…
