Cast and wrought lead or lead alloy container, possibly a bird feeder, of later medieval or post medieval date (1400-1600). The container has been crushed and is incomplete. It is an irregular shape in plan and sub rectangular (square with a flared neck) in profile. The container was probably D-shaped before being damaged. It is formed from one sheet of metal with a seam at one of the rear corners; it consists of a front and rear face, as well as a base. It measures 46.9mm in length, 50.8mm width and is 30.5mm thick. The thickness of the metal varies from 3.7mm at the neck to 2.1mm…

Two Roman samian pottery sherds (of the same piece) from the base of a flat-bottomed bowl or plate. The nature of the fabric - which is mid orangey-red in colour with small calcareous inclusions and has a dark reddish-brown slip - may indicate an eastern Gaulish origin. The two sherds when pieced together measure 42mm long by 39.9mm wide and 6.3mm thick. They weigh 10.77g

A rim sherd of Roman samian ware, probably from a steep-sided bowl or cup, possibly similar to a Dragendorff type 33 (P.Webster, 1996, p.45) vessel. The fabric is light pinkish-orange and has a dark reddish-brown slip. It is most likely to have come from southern Gaul and probably dates from the 1st or 2nd century AD. The sides are slightly convex and there is a transverse groove near the lowest point of the outer face. The sherd is relatively unabraded and measures 42.2mm long by 29.4mm wide and 6.3mm thick. The object is a probable base fragment from a crucible or mould which David Symons (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) suggests possibly dates to the 15th to 17th centuries, or Late Medieval to Post Medieval. The object is ceramic and is incomplete. The material is mid pinkish-red in the centre, and is very hard and brittle which suggests that the object has been heated at a very high temperature, either over or in a fire. The material has occasional sub-rounded inclusions of quartz (less than 1mm). The fragment is 99.4mm x 69.9mm at the base, 53.1mm high and 34.1mm thick. The…

A rim fragment from a medieval or early post-medieval cauldron or skillet, cast in copper alloy. The flattish rim slopes at 45 degrees into a slight internal lip. The object is a possible vessel handle. The object is made of cast copper alloy and is incomplete. In cross-section the object is sub-circular, while in plan the object comprises of a traverse (or longitudinal) piece of copper, which is bent at 45° back under itself. The handle is attached to another piece of copper, which is not part of the handle. Due to heavy abrasion however it is impossible to decipher any distinct shape and what the item may be. The object is 42.7mm long, 31.1mm wide, 8.7mm thick and weighs 26.81mm.

Fragment of Roman glass prismatic bottle. The clearly defined 90-degree angle on the fragment shows that it is a body sherd from one corner of a square shaped bottle. Apart from the one clear edge, the fragment is irregular to both sides. It is made from a thick, light blue-green glass with a high number of bubbles. The fragment is 34.48mm long, 4.2mm thick and weighs 4.02g. Bottles with square bodies were in use in the 1st and 2nd centuries. They were used for the transport and storage rather than as tablewares. See Cool and Price, 1995, Roman vessel glass from excavations in Colchest…

Fragment of Roman glass, probably from a conical beaker used for drinking. The glass fragment is colourless, small and irregular. The profile of the fragment suggests it is from the concave bottom of the vessel, perhaps the very centre as there is a central dimple and nipple. The fragment is 1.62mm thick and weighs 0.33g. Conical beakers of greenish glass dominate 4th century assemblages, however there may be evidence that colourless beakers were produced from the late 3rd century (see Cool and Price, 1995, Roman vessel glass from excavations in Colchester, 1971-1985, page 90).
