Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scars. There is unimarignal retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, creating a slight notch about half way along the edge. There is also unimarginal retouch down the right edge of the ventral face, creating a definite notch about half way along. These notches might have been made in preparation for knapping the flake into a leaf-shaped arrowhead, as it looks as…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint retouched notched scraper, saw or spurred piece. The flake is unimarginally retouched on the distal end, creating three notches and one spur, and on the right edge of the dorsal face. The colour of the flint is a translucent light to dark gray brown. About a third of the dorsal face is covered in cortex which suggests that this was a secondary flake. The ratio of length to breadth is about 1:1. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example of a notched saw on page 143, Fig.5.129, No.F150, and spurred pieces, Nos.F153 & F154 which are all dated to the Later Neolithic.

Flint scraper with a hinge fracture or hinge termination at the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face has been unimarginally retouched from the proximal end down both the right and left edges. The colour of the flint is a mottled beigey gray with litte specks of iron staining on both faces. No cortex remains on the surface of the flake, which suggests that it is a tertiary flake. The length to breadth ratio is 1:1. Andrefsky (1998), illustrates an example of a flake with a hinge termination on page 86, Fig. 5.1(c). Bond (2004) illustrates a similar type…

Flint end and sidescraper, subrectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section, and triangular and arched in profile, with sub-parallel lateral margins, unimarginal worked edges on the right edge of dorsal face, and at the distal end. The right edge has been retouched to create a cutting edge with an angle of about 80º to 90º angle and distal end has been retouched to create an angle between 50º and 60º, which makes the edge effective for scraping but not acute enough to accidentally cut or slice the material being worked. Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scar. There is retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, but the denticulations down the same edge on the ventral face look more like the resultant damage. This might have then been used as a crude saw, but there is no evidence of use wear, unless that is what has caused the damage to the proximal end. The colour of the flint is a mottled mid to dark grey. …

Early Neolithic polished stone axehead or possibly an adze. The tool is incomplete (the butt has broken away) and has been ground so that the surface is smooth. The width of the axehead/adze is unusually narrow and it may have been ground for reuse or used as a small adze. The blade edge is complete and is sharp. The stone is a bluish grey colour and is likely to be Langdale stone - known as greenstone. The greenstone comes from the intrusion of a narrow vein of tuff in the volcanic rocks of Great Langdale in Cumbria. The stone was suitable for making highly polished axes as well as r…

A Neolithic or early Bronze Age primary retouched flake. At the proximal end is the striking platform, and immediately below this on the ventral side are the bulb of percussion, a pronounced bulbar scar and faint ripples. The dorsal side is partly covered with nodule cortex. Several flakes appear to have been removed from one side. The slightly mottled grey and black flint has a mid gloss patina. Dimensions: 30.48mm by 28.37mm by 8.22mm Weight: 7.04g

Late Neolithic probable polished stone axe (incomplete): Slightly tapering segment of a carefully polished ‘bar’ of reddish brown granular stone (probably quartzite) with an oval cross section (maximum 49mm x 31mm). Both ends have transverse breaks but at the slightly narrower end there is a trace of polished surface which suggests a rounded end (probable butt). While the other end may have had a cutting edge, it would seem unsuitable as a working tool since the relatively coarse grain would give a brittleness (a probable line of weakness can be seen at the middle edge of the seg…

Neolithic worked flake knapped from light grey flint. The microlith resembles a leaf shape, however this appears to be due to later breaks, rather than intentional knapping of a crude leafshaped arrowhead. The ventral surface has several large ripples extending from the proximal end. The flake is 30mm long, 10mm wide at the proximal end, extending to 20mm before tapering to 6mm at the distal end.

Complete Neolithic flint axe. Hazel Martingell notes that the axe is flaked on both surfaces except where there are areas of cortex. The flint is rough in quality, probably a large cobble originally. It measures 128mm long, 37mm wide, 36mm thick and weighs 271.26g. The knapping technique consists of the removal of deep flakes at the butt end and flat shallow flake removals at the blade end. The artefact gradually expands from butt to blade. This axe was recovered from the northern part of a ring ditch. The presence of large diagnostic flint artefacts on a site is always of in…

It weighs 1.7g. This shape of arrowhead, dates to the early Neolithic period, 3500 to 2900 B.C.

Polished Neolithic adze head. The adze is incomplete and has been heavily damaged although parts of the smooth polished surface remain intact. The butt of the adze (where it would have been hafted) has broken away and may have been used as a tool itself at one stage. The blade end also displays damage and there are large chips missing from the edges of the tool. Unlike an axe blade, the adze has a blunter edge. The adze head has a slightly pointed oval section and is made from a hard, fine greeny grey stone. This is possibly greenstone from the Great Langdale source in Cumbria. This N…

Lithic implement. Hazel Martingell notes: This is an early Neolithic knife or dagger, c.4000-3000BC. The worked on blade with a serrated edge was probably used for cutting cereals, reeds or meat. The missing butt end was probably in a haft and got broken off. The flint is light grey in colour with small patches of creamy white. The implement is 86.4mm long, 25.24mm wide, 8.46mm at the thickest point and weighs 12.94g.

A Neolithic flint axe complete except for a small number of recent flakes. The blade of the axe is rounded and is missing a large flake from one surface. From here the axe tapers gradually to the butt end (W. 85.5-35mm) which is missing three large and some smaller flakes from the same surface, but would probably have been rounded. The surface from which the flakes are missing has a pale/white patina, except where the flakes are missing, indicating that these are the result of recent damage. The recent flakes reveal a beige/grey flint evident on the other surface where although the…

Flint scraper of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The flake measures 48.8mm length, 37.9mm width, is 12.3mm thick and weighs 22 grams. The bulb of percussion on the reverse of the flake is complete and there is evidence of a number of hinge fractures on the opposite (front) surface. It is likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making as there is a small amount of cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) on the artefact. This area cortex covers less than 15% of the tota…

Small piece of flint debitage (chunk or chip) probably dating from the Neolithic period 3500 - 2100 BC). The piece of flint is irregular in plan and profile and exhibits several areas of working. However, this work does not comprise of any tool type and probably represent waste from tool production. The flint itself is a poor quality with several flaws and also a hinge fracture. This type of flint is common to the Shropshire / Welsh Marches area where flint deposits are either glacial or riverine. The flint measures 15.8mm length, 12.7mm width, is 10.6mm thick and weighs 2.78 grams.
