Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete, later Early Medieval cast copper-alloy fitting or mount, probably a knife scabbard chape, dating to the late 10th or 11th century. The fitting is of an irregular openwork shape in plan and mostly flat in section but slightly hollowed on the reverse. One end of the item is folded over to form the bottom edge of the chape and although this fold has a smooth edge the item has almost certainly been broken at this point. Comparisons to similar mounts indicate that in its present state just over 50% of the original mount has survived. When complete the item would have continu…

Bone handle (possibly from a knife) probably dating to 17th century. The handle has a curved surface and rounded end with one rivet hole along its surviving length. Next to the rivet hole is a smaller hole surrounded by copper alloy corrosion, presumably the remains of a small copper alloy tack. The inside of the handle is flat and would have been attached onto the blade (or tang) with a matching bone handle on the other side

County: Essex

Incomplete copper alloy ‘Wessex type La Tène I’, one piece Iron Age brooch. The head of the brooch is now missing, but would once have comprised of an integral four-coil springhead that would have then extended into the pin shaft. All that remains is the bow of the brooch, which is distinctively arched with a squared C shape profile. It is domed in section, having a slightly flatter reverse, and tapers to either end. A downward turned knop at one end is all that remains of the foot, now heavily worn, but with a tiny fragment of the upper catchplate attached. Hattatt, 1985, Iron Ag

A South-Western Uninscribed ('Durotrigian') stater, of late Iron Age date. This may be an example of a Pale Gold and Silver stater, made from an alloy of gold, silver and copper. This is supported by the weight of the coin, which is comparable to the Pale Gold and Silver staters from the Corfe Common Hoard (Hobbs 1996, p. 153).
