Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman artefact, probably a strap-end, possibly a pendant of the military type. The perforations, a pair of kidney-shaped holes in the upper part of the object and a further broken perforation above, suggest that this is an amphora-shaped strap-end, as such dating to the fourth or fifth century AD (Geake 2001, 31). By definition, the artefact takes the broad shape of an amphora, tapering to a two-part terminal knop 5mm in width. The body to the right of the right-hand kidney-shaped perforation (when looking at the front view of the object) has been bro…

Incomplete cast copper alloy handle from a Roman ‘mandolin’ spoon. The incomplete shaft of the handle is rectangular in section, 2.28mm thick and tapers dramatically from 3mm to 1.64mm at the break point.
