Object type: PENCIL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead writing lead of probable medieval or post-medieval date (1100-1700 AD). The stylus is sub rectangular in plan and sub oval in cross section with a tapered / pointed terminal at one end and a broken but slightly flattening corroded stump at the other. It is possible that the broken terminal once flared and became wedge shaped. The pointed end seems to have been created by shaping the metal (either by cutting or hammering) into a point as there are four distinct side facets which have been worn creating a rounded point. The stylus is a mid yellow brown colour with a heavy pati…

Possible cast lead pencil of probable Medieval date (1100-1500 AD). It is long and thin (although now bent into a shallow U shape) and sub-oval in cross-section with a tapered or pointed terminal at both ends. Both the pointed ends seem to have been created by shaping the metal (either by cutting or hammering) into a point as there are four distinct side facets which have been worn creating a rounded point. It is possible that it may have been decorated with a series of shallow linear grooves, but subsequent damage has distorted this. The pencil is a mid grey colour with a heavy pati…

Medieval or post-medieval lead pencil or writing lead, oval-sectioned, damaged above pointed end, other end flattened, broadening out into a perforated triangular eraser, Length 74mm, shaft thickness 6mm, length of sharpening for point 10mm, length of eraser approx. 16m, eraser width 11mm. Writing leads like this follow the traditional shape of the earlier writing tablet styli, although it is unclear how effective a lead stylus would be for inscribing wax, and it seems more likely that they were used to make grey marks, as pencils. They are difficult to date as they have a long l…

The animals are depicted in fine detail; the lion has particularly detailed mane and paws.
