A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The sealing is oval in shape and hemispherical in section. A figure standing left, with right hand outstretched and left holding a vertical spear or sceptre is visible within an oval panel on the upper surface of the sealing. In the left field, is a possible vertical legend with the lowest letter being 'C' or 'G'. The sealing is pierced horizontally and remnants of a white textile chord are visible running the width of the sealing. On the underside of the sealing is a possible bearded bust right. The sealing measures 18mm in length, 12mm in w…

A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The sealing is oval in plan and hemispherical in section with a flat upper surface. The upper surface possesses a stamped oval panel impressed with an image of a feline, possibly a lion or panther walking right. As in a glass die from Lydney Park (Henig Corpus No. 635), there is a suggestion that he is carrying something in his jaws, a dead animal perhaps, but the impression is defective here. The underside of the sealing is plain and irregular in shape. The sealing is pierced vertically, with the oval perforation visible in the upper and low…

A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The obverse of the sealing possesses relief decoration in the form of an orb (for the sun, but not radiate) embraced by a larger crescent ( for the moon) within a ring of seven small spheres (perhaps the sun and moon again, with the five planets). Compare with BM-E29CAD for this imagery. On the reverse is a radiate orb like that on BM-E29CAD, which in view of the obverse is probably the sun. However, Martin Henig notes that if there rays to the left and right were extended downwards into handles, it would resemble the globular vessel containi…

Cast copper alloy fragment from a key (handle) of Roman date (50-300AD). The fragment consists of the junction between the iron shank and the handle; as well as part of the ornamental openwork handle. The key fragment is irregular in plan and profile. The junction with the iron shaft is sub rectangular in both plan and profile. Each of the four faces is decorated with a series of four horizontal cast bands. Much of the decoration is encased in orange corrosion. This junction is presumably hollow and the key shank would have fitted within the copper alloy handle. Part of the iron shank …
